Have you ever felt bad for beating a game?

Post by GameMasterGuy »

The more one-hit-wonders, games that are amazing but get poor sales and never receive a sequel, that I play, the worse I feel after beating each one. You know that there's never going to be a sequel, an expansion on the game you know and love- there probably won't be a spiritual successor. Sure, you can replay the games, but how many times can you levitate through Psychonauts or redo missions in Toy Commander before it gets boring? If you space the game out, you won't get as much enjoyment from it, but if you beat it, returning to it won't be the same. Tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I cant recall the last time something like that happened, but I do get it from TV shows every now and then - departure from characters I've grown to love and some times the feeling "there will never be another season of Bottom :cry: " could be applied to video games. With TV shows, cartoons and anime, chracters "grow on you", but I rarely feel that way of video game characters, even the really good ones. The last time I felt that way about a game character was Guybrush Threepwood after a Monkey Island 1-3 marathon and Max Payne after MP 1-2 Marathon I think. I kept thinking about them and the way they would react to different things, but I didn't feel sad. After seeing a good anime or TV show (so good that I watch all episodes in a day or two), I usually feel very wistful/sad for some days after finishing it. After a good game, I usually just think "man that was a good game, I almost feel like playing it again already" but not in a particularly emotional way

I do admit that thinking " there will never be a sequel to game X" and "a game like X could never be made today" gets me sad at times.

I guess I don't have very much confidence on the video game industry - I'd rather have the good memories of the glory days than see half-assed sequels leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I do know what you mean, but I think we gamers should learn to settle for less rather than always demand more and more. I really love Portal 1 for it's athmosphere, but I didn't like Portal 2. There are some games that are unique experiences, we should learn to appreciate that and let go, espescially if we want games to be regarded as an art form some day. Some stories don't need a sequel. Just like Yahtzee said;
"Would romeo and juliet been grealy improved by an sequel where they both spring to life and go on a motorcycle tour on the Mediterranean?"
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I felt bad when I beat both Pulseman and Drill Dozer because the chances of Game Freak ever making a sequel for either is practically non-existant.

I don't feel bad about beating a game that is obviously a one-off. What upsets me are games that should have gotten sequels, but didn't. Especially when people named Notch build up false hope.

I feel the same way KDub. Anytime I beat Shenmue 2, I get a feeling of sadness, knowing Yu Suzuki and Sega won't be releasing Shenmue 3 anytime soon, if ever.

I also recently felt that way about Diablo 3, but that was because I don't think the game met my expectations and it didn't feel like the first two games.

Here's hoping that Phantasy Star Online 2 feels and plays like its predecessor!

Not entirely the same feeling but when I beat Lunar: Dragon Song, my first thought was "what the hell is wrong with me to actually finish this game?"

This might seem a little out of place, but every time I play through Final Fantasy 8 I feel a bit sad. It's my favourite jrpg, I *love* the junction system and I know that pretty much no one will ever go back to it.

This. I can't think of any other instances off the top of my head where the story wasn't yet complete. I know there are more but this has to be the most infamous example.

I played the closed beta and it was a lot more MMORPG feeling than the original PSO (Level 200 RAmar representin'). It's more like a refined PSU. However my impression was a lot more favorable than PSU. It looks like the old PSO but it doesn't really feel like it. I don't think you'll be too disappointed though, it was a lot of fun and the return of the 90's-ish cyberpunk art-style is just super awesome.
