iOS Shmups - Official Thread
I saw a note on Touch Arcade about a new black label version of a CAVE shmup coming to iOS.
I'm a little late to the iOS shmup party but these ports seem to get great reviews.
Which have you guys played and/or recommend?

The Mushihimesama games are great. Espgaluda II has a bit much going on, but still works pretty well.
The Dodonpachis are my favorite though.
They are not the same as playing the arcade/360 games (of course), as you can move as fast as you like, and collision detection is a bit off. As far as mobile gaming goes though, the games are great fun.
I'd hope for Futari to get the Black Label, as that one has a hell of a BL.

They suck through battery pretty quick and heat up your device. Also, I believe DOJ requires you to be on the latest hardware revision, whereas the Mushis, EspII, and DFK all run on older iOS devices. Deathsmiles was also ported but I hear it plays terribly so I avoided purchasing it.

Bug Princess 2 Black Label was the CAVE one I was trying to recall earlier.

I played one of the free/lite versions for a bit and while it was kinda cool, it obviously didn't have the same feel. Was it a lot less challenging that a standard controller, or was it just me?

Re: iOS Shmups - Official Thread
Oh yes, finally an iOS shmup thread started
I've been playing a lot of the quality indie titles that are surprisingly solid but I just got Dodonpachi Blissful Death and absolutelyy love it. I've never played it before and I'm digging the Hell difficulty (mentions its the original bullet pattern).
I'll jot down my recommended indie shmup titles because it could be a little tough wading through the vast assortment of indie shooters, looking for the quality stuff. The Cave and Taito titles are a given must and prove to be quite an enjoyable experience even on the iPhone's smaller screen.
In the mean time, check out this gameplay footage of me playing Blissful Death. I'm no Cave champ and don't have a real understanding of the chaining of combos, but I finally managed to unlock 1 credit and have a taste of both levels 2 & 3. Sorry there's no audio, the (jailbrake) app I'm using simply records the display.

do InvaderR , Minimalist shooter, Space Deadbeef and Pew Pew count ?? they are all free
Re: iOS Shmups - Official Thread
Espgaluda II and DDP Resurrection are the best becoz they were the first ones Cave made and they put exclusive iphone modes in them which offer gameplay more suited to touch controls.
DeathSmiles also has an iphone mode but I havent really played it much since playing their side-scroller game on my phone was rather difficult... Maybe it would be fun on the ipad??
the other games are just quick ports. They're fun but like racketboy said they definitely leave something missing if you are into more traditional control.

Much easier. Instead of switching between two fixed speeds, you can move at any rate you wish. On top of that, it almost seems that, if you move fast enough through a wall of bullets, you just kinda make it... pretty much every time.racketboy wrote:I played one of the free/lite versions for a bit and while it was kinda cool, it obviously didn't have the same feel. I looped Dodonpachi Dai Fukkatsu iOS in my first credit, and cleared Espgaluda II in maybe 3 credits.
That said, they are still great fun on the go.
