^ That's certainly a worthy complaint - essentially they don't even know their business then.
I have one near me - the store is pretty awesome and the guy prices things on the fly, by looking at eBay or VGPC. Sometimes it's ok, othertimes I'm like "Baseball Stars II for $13?" Sigh, I guess.

I know a local guy who prices high simply because he's prepared to haggle on everything.

Yes, you should never be afraid to haggle especially at flea markets. Some of these games have been sitting around forever and they're often more willing to get rid of them than you'd think as long as they still make some cash out of it.

I just realized this guy is a good example for this thread:

I've been watching his videos since he started, and it's pretty interesting. Yes, he's a reseller, but his tips for scouring flea markets and garages sales for the best deals can apply to people with personal collections (as he does have one himself) as well.
Please give it a go if you haven't, and leave the annotations on. He's a little annoying at times, but I think it's anything anyone here can't handle.

Re: Is it getting harder to be a retro gamer?
I believe that it's tricky to get good retro games cheap if you're buying from a store, yes. The real gems I've always gotten from random yard sales. The people who don't know what they've got. NES, Gameboy and 64 games are the easiest ones to get, in my experience, but sometimes you get a real gem. For example, a Dreamcast with a controller, VMU, and a bunch of burned disks for a dollar. The only issue is the lid wouldn't close. And that's an easy fix.
Thus, just wander around various yard sales. You should find some good deals. It's just a matter of investing the time.
...Then again, most of you already know this

For sure, but it's not unmanageable yet. The only thing that really bothers me is having to pay prices for games that I know I could have gotten for much cheaper just a couple years back. I blame the AVGN, Classic Game Room, and other such internet show's popularity for the recent boost in popularity classic gaming has received.
I long for the days of walking into a used movie or music store and walking out with a stack of NES games for $20.

That sort of thing is still possible, you just have to move up a few generations. Plenty of people walk out of Gamestops these days with a stack of PS2 games for $20.BurningDoom wrote:For sure, but it's not unmanageable yet. But I know what you mean. Certain systems are more fun than others. I've really been disliking the gradual rising prices of N64 games.

Oh god this. I've been very slow in adding to my N64 collection because of rising prices at both my local stores and online. The only place I can get stuff is at garage sales, which isn't bad, but my local store used to be awesome and totally fair in their pricing. Now only the nichest of niche stuff is not exactly equal to online prices.BoringSupreez wrote:That sort of thing is still possible, you just have to move up a few generations. Re: Is it getting harder to be a retro gamer?
I first got my N64 about 6 years ago. The bulk of my collection was bought in the first two years I owned it, for the very same reason. My game store had very reasonable prices, but now they are the same as Ebay's or higher. I bought OoT for $10 back then, now they want $25.Pichu wrote:Oh god this.
