So I just waged a three day long war against Smitfraud, and that nasty little SOB brought friends like Vundo with him. In the end, I've got so many anti-virus, anti-trojan, anti-spyware programs, I don't know which ones to keep. They all kept pulling up different stuff...
This is what I've got now:
AVG Free Edition
Spybot: Search and Destroy
Windows Defender
VundoFix
SmitFraudFix
HijackThis
McAfee Stinger
AdAware SE Personal
and the install file to AdAware 2008.
And(excepting that install file, which I'll use to replace SE Personal) I used all of it. Three days of constant swearing, running Windows in Safe Mode, checking .dll files in the System32 folder to see what's been recently modified, cutting off or disabling programs that run at startup. Three days of not being able to play PC games and running through bad SNES fighting games while I wait for an anti-virus program to finish its two hour long run of EVERYTHING on my computer. And now...now I'm still not sure if my machine is completely 100%. There's one .dll file that I'm watching, and while I can't delete it, I do have it disabled.
And apparently the beer I bought two weeks ago expired three weeks ago. And I'm drinking it anyway. I figure it's still good.
My EPIC BATTLE

Backup all your necessary files, wipe your hd and reinstall XP. Its the only way to be sure your getting rid of the malware. Also, use a legit copy of XP. When you download XP ISOs off sites such as Demonoid, its highly probable that they have trojans preinstalled that may not even be detectable by ANY antivirus.
In the future, run AVGFree 8 only. Having more than one virus app will not only slow up your system, but cause conflicts as well. Additionally, be sure its running daily scans on all your drives and downloading the updates. I've found its the most well supported and it has a lot of good features. You may want to look into getting a firewall as well, however, I've been sticking with Window's built in version lately due to ZoneAlarm causing conflicts and errors. Simple setups are usually better, especially in a Windows environment.
Lastly, stop your downloadin'! Or, at least, triple check what you are getting and where you are getting it before you launch it.
Hope this helps. If your sick of Windows in general, google: Kalyway

Have you tried this?PhilExile wrote:Hope this helps. If your sick of Windows in general, google: Kalyway
And for virus software: like mentioned above any virus spyware program will slow your computer down and more than one will bring it to a crawl.
I currently run Trend Micro because it is both virus and spyware software and not too slow.
Stay away from norton and mcafee if you want to save cpu speed.

I will consider it a fine day when apple gets a big enough market share that the virus and malware creators turn their eyes toward them. It will take the feather out of all the OSX fanboys who preach that it is invulnerable - not saying that you are one of them PhilExile but your point of Kalyway made me think of it. All that aside, I know for a fact that his processor does not support SSE2.
*fluffs feather*
*cackles maniacally*
EDIT:
I'm currently LOLing at PhilExile with his conspiracy theories abound! ZomG111! Don't download files they have hidden virus in them! I think if you are silly enough to execute a file without either checking it or scanning it for viruses then you deserve all you get.
Further more if you don't backup and you lose your files. Oh well. Shoulda backed up. It's your problem.

Don't say that! I have enjoyed being virus free for 2 years now. Sadly, it does look like the market share for Apple has gone up quite a bit lately which means attackers could turn their attention. I have tried Ubuntu based Linux OS's but I like using Mac OSX the most. Anyways, back to the topic. I would suggest using Avast!. We used it on all of our computers at my school and has worked well against Korean and Chinese viruses we get from our boarder students.fastbilly1 wrote:I will consider it a fine day when apple gets a big enough market share that the virus and malware creators turn their eyes toward them.
