Controlling headphones volume through my TV?

Post by Xeogred »

I can't alter the headphones volume at all when I watch or play games on my HDTV with headphones, but I'd love to. It sounds like you can buy... amps or something though and go through that to control volume?

I'm just totally at a loss here, really clueless about this sort of thing so hopefully you guys can help. I'm so bummed I got the Alien Anthology today, but the damn volume is so freaking low I don't want to watch it anymore (because I DO really want to watch them with headphones!)

Honestly I pretty much always use headphones with my TV. For games it's usually at a decent level, but yeah if I can control it that'd be great. An inexpensive workaround would be nice. It's at the point where I'd rather watch movies on my PC, but I can't do BD's with this thing.

How exactly do the headphones connect to the setup?

The TV should have an external speaker setting for Fixed or Variable in the TV Menu. Be sure it is on variable. The other way is to plug in a volume control designed for the headphones.

I don't think it has any settings like that. I've got a Samsung 32', when I plug in my headphones and set it to "external audio" so it'll just go through the headphones, everything then gets greyed out so I can't do anything else unless I'm missing something.

My headphones go through an RCA jack into the normal headphone input (on the TV) and ones you see in stereo's, computers, etc.

The TV should have volume control even for the headphones. As a workaround you could plug the TV into an external amp and plug the headphones in there. Set the TV to external speaker only to mute the sounds booming in the living room. Or go with a plug in volume control for the headphone cable.

I'm just not seeing anything man, lol. So I'll probably have to get something else.

When I go to Sound in my main menu and select "External Speaker", then it gray's everything out. Then when I try changing the volume at all it'll bring up a "Not Available" pop up on my TV. So then I tried putting it to "TV Speaker", it'll still go through my headphones as well, but then I tried changing the volume and it only altered the TV speakers. Even muted or blasting through the TV, it was the same volume through my headphones.

The TV is detecting the headphone jack being used. Weird it does not control the volume to the headphones. Okay so you can either get an external inline headphone volume control adapter or run a lead to your external surround sound/stereo amp and the headphones plugged into the amp. Select External Speaker if using the Amp route to mute the TV speakers. For the best sound, leave the amp permanently plugged in and select Variable over Fixed if there is an option. The TV volume will then control volume going to the amp.

Do you have any specific recommendations? I'm still living at home so I can't really blast stuff in my room, but I guess it is easy to say the sound kind of sucks on my TV... maybe a stereo would be ideal. Though not sure if I want to spend much money. Maybe a control adapter for now would be the cheaper route?

There's your problem. That isn't a headphone jack, it is a 'line level' output intended to be fed to an amp. It is supposed to have the same standard output level all the time.
