I never knew about this gift system ... 55 hours in, lol. How do I go about it?

Inventory screen for the collectibles. I think you just click on an item and the "present" option pops up, then you pick your characters. They don't like certain items though, so it can actually bring down your affinity.

The number of affinity points you gain varies by item. Shulk, for example, really like parts. So some of them up his affinity for the gift giver by 3 points. I noticed some achievements popped up as I was giving gifts. Give Shulk a bunch of parts he likes, and give Sharla a lot of fruit she likes, and achievements pop up.

They had a system like this in Dragon Age. They did their homework with this game

As you watch heart to hearts a lot of them will tell you what other characters like and dislike. One example has Melia talking about how she likes flowers and Dunban says he doesn't. Another has Sharla telling rikki to give Melia flowers. One more has Dundan talking about a bug he likes and Sharla thinking how she doesn't like them.

Yeah, the inventory management and equipment menus suck really badly.

I would recommend just skipping the gem crafting at early levels. You need great party affinity to increase the number of turns. Your party members can "jump" into the crafting process and give you a huge boost, so you want strong relationships and most the members. I would not waste your time crafting gems below level 3. You'll get pretty decent gems just going through the game. Good enough that you'd never have to craft if you don't want to. Maybe do it if you have some Quick Step crystals, because getting more movement speed can be a godsend.

The gem crafting system is very complicated and poorly explained. It took me a LONG time to fully comprehend it. It's actually not so bad once you get the hang of it. Do not waste time crafting gems that you'll never use. It's actually ideal to NOT create a gem right away, but get two capsules (of a single attribute) in the 90's. Then you combine ONLY them using someone with a strong red flame for best results.

Blue flame: raises all attributes a little each turn
Red flame: raises a couple attributes significantly each turn
Green flame: increases the number of capsules you can take at the end of crafting

Getting above 200 gets you a gem of a higher level. So level 3 crystals/cylinders would make a level 4 gem. Getting above 300 gets you 2x higher level crystals. So level 3 crystals/cylinders would yield two level 4 gems. If you have two capsules at 95 and 90, you're already starting at 185! This system is the only way to craft level 6 gems, as you can only find crystals up to level 5.

It's been a long time since I've crafted, so I admit I'm a little rusty on the rest.

Yeah I'm not sure if I'll worry about understanding the gem crafting too much, haha...

And wow that's nice to know about the gift system, 55 hours in. , I guess that'll help me build up some affinity even though it's maxed out for some at this point. But I think I mainly want to do it to see the Heart to Hearts.

So I'm doing this sidequest, I find a hidden key and unlock this fortress. I walk in and see a throne room. Two lines of lizard like creatures are standing at attention on each side of the throne. They promptly proceed to school my party. I retreat, then I return and use the lure ability to get two of them away from the group. I kill them, the rest come after me, after a heated fight my party emerges victorious. I then look into the throne room and see the item that I need to complete my quest. Soon as I approach it, the noticeably larger lizard creature who has been leisurely sitting down this whole time finally gets up from his throne and promptly slaughters my party in less than a minute

Pretty epic :D

Wish all the side quests were this cool

You know this game is probably going to be a big time collector's item in the future. My copy is still sealed but I want to play it badly.
The game was released in the US exclusively through Gamestop and apparently it didn't sell very well.
I'm thinking about buying another copy to play and keeping one sealed for collector's purposes.

I'm hoping The Last Story sells well otherwise we'll never get Pandora's Tower. I want to play that game so friggin badly!

I think it sold well. The NA sales figures beat the JPN and EU figures by a wide margin, even with retailer exclusivity.

Also, I wouldn't hold your breath for this to be a collector's item. Very few games ever sell for more than their original retail price, even with inflation on their side.

I think its got a good chance of being worth more than the original price. Its a JRPG, released late in the consoles life and with relatively low sales. I can't really see it being any cheaper than it is now at any rate.
