(and figuring out the whole offense to defense thing and how the R2 trigger is actually "defense" shooting even though it is labelled as "auto fire" in the controls area),

woah woah woah. So R2 shooting makes you fly slower? Is that what you're saying? Cuz if so, I was playing that shit wrong. Actually now that you say it, I guess it's much like Deathsmiles where holding B gives you a powerful shot but slows you down and R2 gives you a weaker shot but you can fly faster. You're right, they really didn't explain that well in the Akai manual.

This is how I think it is:

Holding down A = power shot, gets you the energy "H" guys. This shot leaves you exposed to taking more damage. You also use this when you become the person and then the enemies give you katanas.

Tapping A / R2 (auto-fire) is the regular shot. You go faster (I think?) and you get steel from the enemies to build towards being able to morph using X.

I don't know... I'll let you know how I make out next time I pop it in. We should really start a high-score thread for this though seeing as how it's a new Cave game available for $40 brand f'ing new.

It took all of my continues (and my pride) but I finally saw the beginning of level 5 in Raiden III. I can make it through the first two levels without too much difficulty but I pretty much fall apart after that. Some assorted thoughts:
-The music in this game is truly awful
-I wish there was a "pink bullets" version of this game
-Blue>Red>Green
-R=H>M
-This is not a good way to cool down on a hot summer day.

Don't worry, Raiden III is hard as shit, stage 3 is brutal.

I love that stage 2 tune. Moss was definitely trying to keep the feel of the Raiden series with those simplistic tunes, but I dig em.

I find myself wishing more games had bright bullets, it makes things easier for sure. Granted, a tank will still snipe you point blank

I actually like green in that game, at least for the stages.

Heh, now I want to play this awesome game.

Great game. Def. Top 5 and maybe the best ever.

Be sure to check out the hi-score thread for some tips and tricks...mainly getting the menu in English and unlocking the other ships.
