gtmtnbiker wrote:I picked up Parodius Portable for the PSP. It seems pretty neat. Still trying to figure out things since it's in Japanese. I'll have to look at some walkthroughs to try to understand the game. The first thing I found is that there is no walkthrough for Parodius Portable since it's a collection of Parodius games.
Any Parodius PSP fans here?

I wouldn't put rail shooters in the shmups category. Panzer Dragoon, Space Harrier, Light Gun games, etc. are all rail shooters but not traditionally shmups. They are "borderliners":
I'm going by this glossary, which I find to be quite good and specific, written boy those who know:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9665
Borderliner: Broad term used to describe “shooting” games that many, but not all, players do not consider to quite qualify technically as shmups. Examples include “Run n’ Gun” shooters (Contra, Metal Slug), “Rail” shooters (Panzer Dragoon, Star Fox), and “Tube” shooters (Gyruss). As with shmups themselves, there really is no hard-and-fast definition of what exactly constitutes a “borderliner,” and individual conceptions of it vary widely.

It's awesome! I can't decide between Gradius Gaiden and V for my favourite Gradius game. I found V to be a bit easier, only because Gaiden basically rapes you in the last few levels.
There is sort of an interesting storyline in Gradius V that you need to play in order to get the most out of it. It is very unique and cool for a shoot 'em up. It is DEFINITELY worth getting, and it isn't too expensive either. Easily one of the best shoot 'em ups out there, including Radiant Silvergun and the like. Heck, they're made by the same guys anyway (Treasure)!

So you wouldn't count defender or fantasy zone as shmups? [/pedantic]
Theres also Geometry wars which I'd definitely consider a shmup, but is in the same sort of top down arena style. I guess games just have a lot of genre crossover, and the dividing lines are a bit blurry.

I think they should have called Taito Legends 2 SHMUP edition. I was FLOORED at the number of them -- about 1/3 of the collection is shmups!
Favorite ones on TL2: Darius Gaiden, Genrikidan, Metal Black & Rayforce (I have PC version)
Check out ExedExes on Capcom Classic Collection Vol 1 (PS2) and Wii VC Arcade!

Valkyrie-Favor wrote:I liked Scramble a lot when I was a kid. Awesome game.
Lately I'm playing Hydorah, a free indie PC shmup. I'm not too good at shmups and I'm stuck on level 2. Anyone play this game? It sends you through a decent length, fairly easy level, a boss, and a really huge, multi path level with
bats that circle behind you and murder you at every fork. I try to destroy all of them before they can get behind me, but something else ends up shooting me I can't get past this part, and it makes you start at the beginning of the first stage if you game over. I've never met a video game bat I liked

Starts off well enough with a small retrospective of the series up through 2001, starting with Scramble and going through Salamander & related games.
I think it does a fantastic job of keeping everything fresh and new, and retaining the great old fashioned Gradius features and gameplay. You can choose your weapon layout, even switching to Salamander style weapons (including the ingame powerup voice staying true to that calling the Options "multiples")
Started off a little slow but it was a good early demonstration of the more advanced graphics and animation the GBA was able to pull off. It's a very nice looking game and everything is easy to see on the small screen.
A feature I know I'm going to be spoiled by is the ability to leave a game in progress and start on ANY checkpoint that you completed on any stage you already cleared to come back to anytime. Yes, this shmup SAVES YOUR IN GAME PROGRESS RIGHT DOWN TO THE LAST RESURRECTION POINT.
Plus, it has a "hint" option in which you can review a portion of the game you have trouble with through a demonstration. Think of it as the YouTube playthrough. Sure came in handy on one point in Stage 3.
As the only Gradius title to appear on the GBA, I say it's a good buy.
