I won a lot of Japanese laserdiscs off eBay which included the entire 1991 magical girl series "Magical Princess Minky Momo" (minus two unaired episodes) as well as a couple OVAs. The series is definitely one of the most unusual parts of my anime collection.
I'm enjoying watching an episode every couple of days, though it's nothing I could marathon. It has a lot of cuteness, the main character is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara (whom I like), and even though I'm not fluent in Japanese, I'm able to follow along pretty well.
And I have no shame about being a full-grown man watching shows aimed at 5-year-old girls.
Also in the lot was something called "Cynical Hysterie Hour" which I've been trying to find information about but haven't come up with much. It's a collection of a few short films with a soundtrack by John Zorn. Apparently the soundtrack album was once considered a highly sought-after collectible, but I can't find any information about the rarity/value of the laserdisc. It's pretty awesome regardless.

I remember that show and the incredibly cheesy Theme song....Michi wrote:I think I caught a couple of episodes of this when it was on Fox Kids....I didn't like it then eithergarrett123 wrote:

Claymore
I frankly DETEST anime, but I absolutely love this series. The main characters are really endearing, and even though there is some typical anime cheesiness and over the top stupidity, it's definitely downplayed and much more mature than I would have expected. Definitely recommend this one.

Seems like you just haven't watched the right series. Try something like Monster if you're looking for more mature. Perhaps ANYTHING from Satoshi Kon. You may or may not like The Tatami Galaxy. One of my personal favorites. And plenty more. Basically, try more seinen series, if anything. They are aimed at adults.Retrogamer0001 wrote:Claymore

Also, try Berserk if you haven't. It predates Claymore and is also dark fantasy but more mature. Berserk is seinen (college age and above) where as Claymore is shonen (aimed more at middle - high school kids).

Watching the English Dub of "Case Closed" aka "Detective Conan" episodes 1-79?
The Japanese original "Detective Conan" has over 600 episodes!
and like a little over 100 were only Dubbed by Funimation and aired on Cartoon Network for a short period, i thought it was pretty good from the few episodes i seen back then.

I'm slowly making my way through Bladr Force EXA on Crackle. It's an interesting enough cyberpunk show that finds a way to wedge mechs and VR into the mix. Campy, but enjoyable.

Yeah, considering Claymore is just "good" at its best. Nothing spectacular.ZenErik wrote:Seems like you just haven't watched the right series. Really irks me when people just watch like Bebop or Akira, or some other random stuff and just figure that's the scope of the entire anime medium. Oh well. I'll just stop myself. Long day, lol.

Yep. Bebop and Akira are great, but they're hardly the entire medium. Hating anime is kind of like hating film in general...there's so much of it, and so diverse, it's silly to write off all of it. That's like saying you have all jazz
About Detective Conan...I followed that show through the Case Closed english version, up to episode 600something of the fan translation. I just can't watch it anymore...it's become unbearable. A shame because it had some really creative cases. If you want cool detective stuff just read Ray Chandler. Nothing on TV, animated or otherwise, has been able to scratch my hardboiled detective itch.

Currently watching Ouran High School Host Club, second episode. Loving this series so far and it may rank up there with my favorite animes. It's really over the top and funny and the dub is actually pretty good. Can't believe I haven't heard of this one before.
