They have published quality games: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Eidos Montreal), Just Cause 2 (Avalanche), Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light (Crystal Dynamics).

Honestly, the excitement I got out of this wasn't for anything from Square-Enix. I just see it as a starting point to imagine what some actually good devs  could do with this.

A Naughty Dog game with this kind of engine would be mind blowing. I still think the biggest issue is going to be development expense. You think creativity has already stagnated?

If you check out some of the additional coverage of the presentations SE showcased it at (like the last screenshot here) there is a glimpse of the scripting tool that's a part of it. Coupled with the ability to push pixels is the ability to put all of it together in the first place.

The sheer amount of art assets that go into something like this do make it quite expensive, but the tools used in the creative process are getting better all the time too. In turn, what developers will be able to do at a given budget will still continue to get better. It's more a question of tools keeping up with tech, or vice versa

As a case-in-point for what I'd mentioned above, some of the writeups on Epic's Unreal Engine 4 presentation explain why some of it is really a big deal

There's the actual walkthrough of an environment in the engine, explaining some of the stuff it's doing here.

Here's also an Arstechnica article explaining why that's significant.

You must live in a cave. Within that decade I've played two games from them featuring the best combat system in the jrpg genre and easily the most amazing graphics of anything to come out in the HD generation
