XBLA August: Braid, BC:R, Galaga, CASTLE CRASHERS, more

Post by RadarScope1 »

Time to buy some spacebucks. They're ringing in the fall season with killer late summer DLC.

* July 30: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
* August 6: Braid
* August 13: Bionic Commando Rearmed
* August 20: Galaga Legions
* August 27: Castle Crashers

I won't be getting GW2 (the first one is pretty cool but didn't 'grab' me) and I'm a little iffy about the art style of the new Galaga (where's the color and throw-back look?) but the other three are Day 1 purchases for me provided the reviews don't call them out as bombs.

We need to circle some evenings on Aug. 27 or after for Racketboy forum play-throughs of CC.

I was actually going to post this, so I'm glad I saw your topic first. Good stuff coming to XBLA! I'll definitely be getting Galag Legions and Bionic Commando. :D

Why is it all gray and green? You would have thought they'd do it in a style that's more true to the original yet still souped up, like Pac Man CE. It looks OK I guess but I'll have to try the demo to see what I think.

Don't fret...Castle Crashers is mostly coop, until we compete for the princess' kiss - then all bets are off!

I see plenty of green enemies, but I'm not sure what you're referring to that's gray. The paths of enemies that are shown to the player?(which I think is kind of neat) It has strayed a little farther from the Galaga formula than Pac did from it's, but I still see plenty of similarities. Scrolling starfield, player position at bottom of screen(for the most part), multiple side-ships(expanded into 'legions'), enemy formations.

Pacman has fairly simple and unique gameplay(what other pacman-like games do you play...that aren't pacman?), but shooters have evolved quite a bit since Galaga. Galaga was pretty simple, so an update is going to have to complicate the formula somewhat, or it'd likely be boring by today's standards. The strategic elements they've added (http://kotaku.com/5026439/galaga-legion ... alaga-hell) sound like a good fit. How it works in practice is why I'm not 100% sold.

I think all the green just makes it look "blah" to me, so my brain thinks gray. I have never been the person who bitches about art style because some character's zipper is out of place or whatever. (I didn't understand the SF4 reaction at all -- it still looks like street fighter. And people who sign online petitions like the Diablo 3 people at nuts.) BUT I just don't get the Galaga vibe on this one.

I've watched the vids a couple more times. The formations look really cool, but I'm not much a manic shmup player and it looks like it's in the direction. I guess they are being smart by taking a classic and updating it for what the current shooter crowd will really go for.

Anyway not trying to get too down on it -- I'm totally giving it a try and will surely buy if it provides any level of fun close to PMCE.
