What are the best Galaga-like shooters?

Or shooters in the Space Invaders vein. I wonder because I've played Galaga 88 and even though the difficulty is punishing, it looks like a quite fun game.

And I have heard Space Invaders Extreme 2 being called the OutRun 2 SP of Space Invaders, which makes me extremely interested.

well the recent Space Invaders games like EX have been excellent! There's also a very cool indie PC game called They Came From Verminest that is extremely Galaga-inspired and gives you the option of using old school red/blue 3D glasses! (http://www.locomalito.com/verminest.php )

The game known as Majestic Twelve, in Taito's great tradition of giving their games totally different JP/US/World titles, is also known as Super Space Invaders '91 (on Taito Legends 2) and Space Invaders Part IV.

If you've done Galaga '88, did you do Gaplus/Galaga 3 yet? That's a good one.

Galaga with the speed chip and Galaga 88 are my two go to fixed shooters. Space Invaders Extreme 1&2 on the DS with the spinner is awesome, but without they are just lesser games.

I have a soft spot for King & Balloon. Not only was it one of the first games to utilize voice synth, but it is a charming early arcade game in an Arabian Nights setting.

How about Psikyo's Space Bomber? Its a pretty fun Galaga style arena shooter, but it does have the occasional boss to change things up.

it was sadly never ported, so MAME is the only way to try this one out.
