I've heard covering the seed in chilli powder works well. It doesn't bother the birds, but the squirrels can't stand it.

it's pretty healthy and getting big, probably time to reintroduce it to the wild soon...

Growing up in Chicago, I remember you could put peanut butter on a cracker, hold it out, and squirrels would eat it straight out of your hand. These NC squirrels however have been through decades of yokels hunting them and are much more, well "squirrely".

Don't get me wrong, I like the fuzzy creatures, I just don't like them eating all the bird seed. That, and they really are more neurotic than Mid-West squirrels.


to add* Chili seeds, chili powder, red pepper flakes don't do squat to deter squirrels. I've tried a few times, never worked.

Don't worry, change of plan. No squirrels will be harmed. I found the "entry point" and I'm simply going to block it. Just have to make sure there's no squirrels in the attic first.

Funny you should mention that! I do have bees on the farm here, I'm trying to get into beekeeping.

Luke, you made me think of my parents. The squirrels are always getting into their bird feeders and it drives them nuts.

The other day my mother called complaining that the turkeys were eating all the birdseed. I said, "Turkeys are birds ya know" and she was like *sigh* "You know what I mean, Bone."

I have two "squirrel proof" bird feeders, with at times up to seven squirrels trying to take all the seeds. I don't mind the squirrels getting a seed or two, but they are complete hogs who scare off the birds, except for one. There is one bad ass blue jay that simply doesn't play nice. Gorgeous bird at that.

In Mass, we have to deal with big birds:

Luke, you made me think of my parents. The squirrels are always getting into their bird feeders and it drives them nuts.

"Squirrel proof" or not, the buggers always find a way. I swear they work as a team as well. We have one feeder that is supposed to gauge weight. The squirrels will quickly jump on and off of it, releasing just a few seeds.

We have another "squirrel proof" feeder that has a few tiny slits for beaks to enter, but two squirrels will jump on that sucker at once and rock the feeder until a few seeds hit the ground.

I might purchase a squirrel twirl today. As my Father once said "Doesn't keep them away from seed all the time, but at least it is entertaining to watch".

My wife's grandfather built a squirrel-proof bird feeder about a year ago. It's hard to explain in writing, but basically the weight of the squirrel causes a door to close restricting access to the seeds. Since the birds are lighter they don't have a problem. It's amazing, I'll try to find a pic later.
