What would be a good format for a videogame/geek quiz show?

Anything that is gaming related that doesn't fit well anywhere else

What would be a good format for a videogame/geek quiz show?

Post by Erik_Twice »

It's common to see quiz shows at geek events but I have tyo say, there's a lot of untapped potential there and the quality tends to be inconsistent, with the shows not quite cliking well together.

The biggest problem seems to me the narrowness of the answers. If you ask about, I don't know ,characters from a game or recognizing a tune, you are going to get simly get one or two people who absolutedly know the answer and lots of people who haven't even played the game and that's not fun. Hence, ideally you would want a format wide enough to make guesses or try to deduce out of the possible answers.

So I was thinking about a format where you get the answers first, or something that railroads players a bit. Giving answers first and then the question to see who answers first is a common format and seems pretty nice.

Buzzers aren't a problem, I can try to make some, it shouldn't be hard to make them with some relays and some big buttons.

Thoughts on my crazy ideas?

Have you seen the site Sporcle?

There are a number of ways you can implements a trivia game on that (and a ton of gaming ones already there). The typical format there is probably one of the better ways to approach this, since you're mostly populating a list (the downside, of course, is that the questions are static). Plus, you can usually just start guessing

A friend of mine likes to pull up that site when he visits. What I've found is that, usually, a larger quiz with a diverse answer set is better for a group. Better chance that everyone can contribute.

Anyone ever saw Nickelodeon Arcade as a kid? Now that was good ol' fashion TV programming!

I used to love the show Beat the Geeks. I think it had an excellent format. I don't know if there was ever a guest Video Game/Computer Geek, though.
