To me, any game that allows you to "pause" the action, ie, the board doesn't scroll-force you along, can not be a shmup. The elements that allow you to farm, in a game like In the Hunt, put it in the Run 'n Gun camp, which is half shmup, half platformer, imo.

So, where do non-scrolling shooters like Space Invaders, Astroids, Galaxian, Galaga, Astroids, Super Stardust, etc. fall? Are they not shoot 'em ups?

---I really don't like the name "shmup" much. I just think it sounds stupid.

Same with NES and SNES.
They should be pronounced "N-E-S" and "S-N-E-S/ Super N-E-S." :)

I'd rather do a top 25 to be honest :)

Yeah, that's my take on it too. Out of my 5, I'd probably rotate 2 or 3 of them out so often. But those 5 are solid choices I'd never mind playing or replaying. I've been talking with BoneSnapDeez on the other big shmup thread about Firepower 2000, a fine choice on the SNES. I can run that straight through, and it's a good thing, because there's no continues, but quite a few extends.

I could say I love The Guardian Legend (I do), but I'd have to add a disclaimer that it's part adventure-exploration and part shmup. TGL password puts it as a straight up Compile classic.

I agree with the other poster that post-Raiden and pre-Cave is probably my favorite period of all time. 90s shmups on consoles and in arcades were really becoming their own around that time. SNES shmups hold a special place for me, no matter how good or bad.

I'll have to do top 4, since unless you count Run n' Guns, these are the only shmups I've played.
4) Xevious
3) Twinbee
2) Sonic Wings Special
1) Metal Torrent

THANK YOU

I hate it when I hear "Super Ness" or something.

You've played Twinbee and Sonic Wings Special (along with the other two), but have played no other shoot 'em ups? Seriously, you have never played a Gradius, R-Type, Darius game, etc.?

How in the heck is that even possible? I mean... you've played freaking Sonic Wings Special as one of your four shooters, but have played no others???

It was the first shmup I saw on PSN, okay. I first got all of these games less than a year ago, so I'm pretty new to this genre. Besides, I recently got a Sega Saturn and one of the two games I got was Darius Gaiden. I'm honestly not sure about it yet. It's kind of fun, but it's kind of hard to get in to.

Shmup sounds fine, but shoot-em-up sounds better. "Ness" or "Sness" is abhorrent. I fought in the 16 bit wars, no one pronounced them like that. Maybe those out in the boonies, but not normal, city-dwellin' folk.
