USB vs. Ethernet

not to be rude but its pretty much an industry standard for cable modems. I install them for a living, i would know. the address of the diagnostic page is totally independent from the IP's that handle traffic.

you aren't being rude, I was just saying not "all" are like that

I get the independence of it, but I'm just saying. If it doesn't work when he attempts to go to the specified address it might be different. For instance the modem in my house acts as a router and can have a regular hub attatched to it. The IP address defaults to 192.168.1.1

90% is not all, and if forums will teach anyone anything. For some odd reason, every time some one asks a question, they have that one model of a machine that does things ass backwards.

My numbers WERE

15.5 Mbps

Now they are

5.5 Mbps

I tried the IP address to check the modem and here were the results

Downstream Value

Signal To Noise Ratio 38.7 dB
Power Level 9.5 dBmV

There were also a LOT of these in the logs

3-Critical T002.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire FEC framing

The people that I deal with want to send people out who are HIGHLY unskilled, Last time I lost the power cord to my computer(God knows how they accomplished this!!!) when they were cutting cable and another time the guy spent the whole time showing me how to download things

those levels are great, it sounds to me like your just getting choked out by the USB connection. those speeds are almost the same as the last time i checked a modem via both interfaces.

Thanks for the help! I'll try to exchange the modem and get one with a non fried Ethernet port, Unfortunately the lightning took it out along with the computer.

A lot of cable modems have a poorly implemented USB interface, and I suspect that is the case with you modem... It looks like you've already decided to replaced it, so here's another nudge to do exactly that.

Thank you for the info, That's the last time I use the USB connection for a modem!
