Emulation on PS3 via Linux

For any of you who have a PS3...

Have you tried running any emulators through a Linux distro (e.g. Yellow Dog)? I've seen clips on the web of these running, but would like to hear some impressions from those who've given it a shot. Apparently NES and SNES emulators work - do they work well? Can you use the PS3 controller and/or a PC controller? Do emulators for Atari/Sega consoles work? I'd like to hear from anyone who has done this before taking the plunge to install Linux on my PS3...

I haven't used Linux on my PS3, but it can PowerPC distributions of Linux. I'd assume any emulator that's compiled for the PowerPC architecture would work on the PS3. This site has a tutorial for installing Yellow Dog Linux onto the PS3.

it would be great to see some emulators for newer consoles like cd/dvd based systems that would be ran of the cds or dvds themselves.. I mean everything from Sega CD to Playstation 2, maybe even Xbox 1..PS3 have for sure the power to emulate PS2..but nobody has tried it so far..It would be very useful, because only a minor part of PS3s have PS2 compatibility and even those PS3s don't have perfect compatibility.

i must poke holes and the 60gb has perfect emulation of PS2 games as it has the ps2 hardware inside (also making it substantially heavier than the other models) and w/ all the firmware updates 80gb has 99.8% compatability.

but PS3 with PS2 backward compatibility isn´t made anymore. And what about those other CD/DVD based systems?

buy the original systems, mabe im just purest but im usually hesitant to play anything but the official system, thats why i dont use b/c on ps3 even though i have the 60gb.

The still-for -sale Metal Gear Bundle 80 GB PS3 has backwards compatibility. I've thrown plenty of PS2 games at it with no problem. You can read more here:

I'm not sure I've gotten an answer to my question - it might be that no one has tried this out, though. Has anyone here run NES/SNES/Genesis/etc. emulators on a PS3 via Linux? If so, what were your impressions?

Ok back on topic.

Linux on PS3 is practically useless for most things. Nobody has been bothered to code a parralel windowing system so most programs run slow as hell. Plus the fact that the hypervisor will not allow anyone to code programs that utilise the GPU in the PS3 makes watching video and playing 3d games or emulators practically useless.

The most you will be able to do on it is play a few 2d games and emulators (that have been ported to the very under used PPC linux architecture). As well as other boring linux things

Linux on the PS3 is little more than distraction, used by Sony so that they can claim that the PS3 is a computer rather than a console. They get certain tax benefits for selling it as a computer.

When you also add in that you can only split your hard drive into a 10GB linux partition and the rest for the PS3 OS or vice versa. (but with games requiring minimum 5GB installs these days you wouldn't want to split it the other way) it's practically useless for almost anything.

The 20 and 60GB PS3s have the emotion engine hardware built-in. No emulation.
