Have you

A) tried it on MAME
B) tried it using rapid presses instead of holding down fire

I think you are writing this off way too quickly.

A) No.
B) No.

But my problem with the game is neither

A) it moves too slow.
B) I don't shoot enough bullets.

I just generally feel like the screen is super-cramped most of the time. I'm not as good at horizontal shmups, and when I feel like the space I can safely fly is very limited, it just annoys me and feels like a poorly designed game.

I'm not writing it off though yet. I mean I have all month to try it again with different perspective. I'll probably try it on MAME to see if it feels any different to me, but like Mike said -- I'm more in the mindset that I'd rather play whatever physical copy I own if I went through the trouble of owning it. I'm always far less enthused about playing an emulated game (see: Truxton emulation issues and my quickly lost interest in the admittedly excellent Dimahoo).

What's the difference between the Saturn port and emulating it through MAME?

I downloaded the romnation.net rom and played. I'm not seeing an improvement over the PS2 release.

Is anyone else having the herky-jerky motions and slowdown experiences that Dave is having on PS2-US?

I typically dislike compilation discs but this plays rather well. I like that the backdrops are actually crisper than the SAT-J release.

Gekirindan on the other hand, I prefer on SAT-J, the graphics didn't translate as well on this PS2 version

Right now my goal is 10 seconds or more. I want 25K combined from at least 10 sec x 1000, 10K perfect and 5K for enemies.

I like it too, this is a game to see how far I can get, and I feel myself getting better with every play through. I'll see the Stage 3 boss soon. Didn't think I'd get that crazy far in Truxton either when I first started. I can't wait to see what other nice graphics this game has, as well as the 2nd bonus stage.

My tips on that -- again, just keep the cross hair focused and even if it doesn't seem like a logical lock on, sometimes it will beep as if you did, so as soon as you see yellow and hear it, press that button. Watch for the gold ship's movements too as they are a bit more erratic.

As for version comparisons, remember TL2 is also available on the original Xbox and also on the PC. Don't know if it will play on the 360 and you gotta deal with that crap DRM on the PC disc too, but it runs perfectly well.

Checking in...

I've got a pretty busy real-life week so I'm playing when I can, did 3 runs last night and I kept dying in Stage 2 so nothing new to report, just glad that Stage 1 doesn't give me any issues and I just gotta pay a bit more attention on the next one.
