Real life or Virtual reality?

Post by J T »

I have placed real photos next to virtual photos from Outerra: Anteworld. Can you tell which ones are real and which are artificial? (Hint: if you search through my screenshot thread, you will find the virtual ones, but not the real ones)

Answers:
Snow cover: Left is real
Ocean sunset: Right is real
Aerial view: Left is real
Grassy hillside: Left is real

I got them all right except the arial view - d'oh.

It'd be more impressive if the screen shots weren't such low res. Reminds me of that article Kotaku ran on Konami's engine being able to render realistic images. Yea, they looked real but they were also the size of small gifs.

I got them all correct. It was kind of obvious to me since there are certain things that aren't possible to render easily yet. I'm also a graphics whore so I know real life looks best always.

I got the last three right. I think the last one is especially obvious. The first one I couldn't tell.

Check the screensots thread and you'll see the higher res (1366 x 768), or just download the demo and try it yourself. They have recreated the entire planet Earth's elevation topography and then populated it with different biomes. You can even hit the "g" key to bring up Google Maps to see where you are in-game. It is certainly impressive in scale and grandeur. Check this video for a fly-by of Earth.

Also, keep in mind that this is an ongoing project still in its relatively early stages. They keep adding new stuff. The most recent being the rendering of ocean waves, as seen in this video. All this stuff is done in realtime.

Here's another:

Left is real. Right is from Dirt 2.
Left is from Outerra: Anteworld. Right is real.
Left is from Mirror's Edge. Right is real.
Left is real. Right is from Skyrim.
Both are real.
