Aren't there certain DS accessories that require the GBA slot though?
Yup.

The Guitar Hero games, for starters.
Meh, small loss. The DS versions of Guitar Hero didn't come close to the console releases.

Isn't the entire DS line, dead? Are there still official games coming out for the DS?

Yep, there are still new DS games on the way I believe. Pokemon Black and White 2 is like Gold and Silver and will work on DS or the 3DS but with extra features.

I didn't know this. I'm not a Pokemon fan. Is this pretty much just those games, or are there still like normal monthly releases coming out for it?

Its dwindling down for sure but I'm pretty sure some lower grade 3rd party stuff, imports and just some others hodge podge stuff is coming out.

I'm thinking that like the GBA, it'll take until the 3DS has been out for 2 or 3 years before releases totally dry up. The DS is the #2 system of all time, after all.
