From what I've gathered, this will be an exploration based Castlevania, mostly in 2D. There are apparently some 3D combat bits, similar to Lords of Shadow.
Although I'm slightly disappointed that its not completely 2D, my 3DS will be getting a new Castlevania game. I'm hoping this does not become the next Other M.
Castlevania Mirror of Fate - 3DS
Re: Castlevania Mirror of Fate - 3DS
Thanks for the info.
I was not sure what to think about it first, but from what i've read there it might be good and i just got excited for it. It will be nice to be able to play with other characters. I'm looking forward to see how they made Trevor and Simon. Maybe Simon will be like he was shown on the Beta footage?

Anyway, can't wait to see it and to whip some vampire's ass.

Much as I love Mercurysteam (or, at least, Blade of Darkness) I really hope this doesn't mean we won't see any more Castlevanias with Konami at the helm.

Ugh, continuation of Lords of Shadow instead of giving us Castlevania 1999.

No, in the Castlevania storyline there is a climactic battle in 1999 with Julius Belmont as the Belmont who defeats Dracula once and for all and Castlevania gets sealed in an eclipse. Aria and Dawn of Sorrow are in the wake of that event.

I really love the Castlevania series but IMO Lords of Shadow did not feel like a Castlevania game in any way. The music, the setting, the enemies - none of it seemed to have much of a connection to the rest of the series. Mirror of Fate looks like it's a little more in touch with the series' roots, but even if I had a 3DS I wouldn't be holding my breath in anticipation.
I'd rather see some another game with IGA at the helm.

I've put a few hours into it now, and I like the game. It's not as amazing as some of the more venerable, 2D entries in the series like SOTN, Order of Ecclesia, etc. It's not quite as deep or challenging, but it's still a respectable Castlevania game. The music is good, The graphics are good if you don't mind the 3D look. The controls are solid. The cut scenes are nice. The voice acting is decent. There's nothing really offensive about this game.
I've heard people say it's a move away from the 2D metroidvania formula and more like the NES style Castlevania games. That's only true if you play it that way, meaning that you just keep pressing forward towards your next objective making it a very linear experience. However, I've spent the past hour retracing my foot steps after acquiring a new ability. In returning to previous areas I've found new areas, upgrades, items, teleport rooms, and a new spell. All the while gaining levels and getting new attacks. If that's not metroidvania, I don't know what is.

Wow. I've reached a point in the game now where the boss fights have gotten really good. These are definitely the kind of boss battles I would expect from a Castlevania game. I had a really fun boss fight with a succubus and a tough as nails battle against some four legged creature that took me like half an hour of deaths before I won.
This is a solid title.
