Together Retro: Wolfenstein 3D
Re: Together Retro: Wolfenstein 3D
6 levels into Ep 4, and they are making it a lot harder. Interesting map designs.

Episode 4 complete -- and just before I got to the point of pulling my hair out.
Watch out for Mad Otto Giftmacher -- no joke he is a hell of a boss.
Evil Otto from Berzerk he is not!

Episode 5's levels have been pretty small in size but not in difficulty. E5M2 features a nice section lovingly called "The SS Gauntlet" in one of the YouTube videos I had to watch to figure out how the hell to get past it to get to a room with more point items and ammo.

YEAHHH!!!!!!
Episode 5 complete, and I think it was just as easy as Ep 1, was NOT as bad as Ep 4 was, easier maps and fewer enemies. E5M2 was still not fun.
Boss was just another member of the Grosse family, not as bad as Ep 2 and 4 in that respect.
Next week I will finish up on Episode 6 and stop the chemical war!

I'm hoping I can meet my personal goal of completing the first episode before month end. I had the original game (or maybe just the demo?) for the PC but never put a lot of time into it (Doom and Quake were more my favorite).
I'm on Level 7 right now.
I love how you can constantly save

Dude, you're hardcore

Re: Together Retro: Wolfenstein 3D
Something I should have done many, many years ago has finally been finished today.

That's how it ends. E6M9 was a murderous boss stage. There were guards all throughout the boss room, in the meantime the dude's got a rocket launcher and everyone's out to kill you. Accessed the pushwall for health and ammo, boss ends up leaving the huge room and comes in and out of the entrance doors so I just strafed away and avoided him seeing me so I wouldn't get rocket'd to death. Sadly, the DeathCam(TM) technology was still in its nascent stages to see through walls.
Might I add on the GBA port that you cannot quicksave or quickload in the middle of a level? Only at the start, so every death would downgrade you and you'd have to load the game again to start with what you had from the previous area.

Long clear time was undoubtedly because I took so long taking out hundreds of guards on the final level.
I put this one behind a spoiler tag because it's the final story page.
Second page was kinda fun so I included it as well.
Next month: More PC fun and a game I have a lot of fun memories with -- Command & Conquer!

That's awesome Exed, congrats on seeing through all six episodes - and on a GBA at that
There is something to be said for rediscovering the game on a new platform. The PC version is king, but I quickly tired of it partway through Ep1 earlier this month. Playing on the iPad was strangely satisfying, probably becasue it felt fresh and new...
I don't personally have a lot of interest in C&C, but I'll at least give it a go.

Definitely give it a try. It's an awesome game, and I really like the soundtrack. It was made in the mid-90s, so their idea of a semi-realistic near-future conflict is set in Eastern Europe which makes it a neat little tribute to the era it was made in.
What's funny is that although I far far more memories and nostalgia for Wolf3D, I'm actually more excited to play C&C. Don't forget everyone: the Windows 95 compatible Gold edition is freeware now! Don't skip it because you don't want to spend money!
