1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 1-3, 1-4
If I recall right you can't do 1-3 and 1-4 until you've cleared everything out. You want to save 5 for last because the poison swamp sucks so very very much. You can also hop around a bit, such as doing 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 2-2, 3-2, 4-2 if you find yourself getting stuck on a -2 stage. Beating 4-1 does unlock one of the best soul grinding areas in the game, so that also helps.

Give me some tips. One man can only die on the first level so many times...
After dying a few times, I made a round trip back to the Nexus in the first level. Are all the enemies I killed going to respawn when I go back? And it seems like the souls that you can pick up if you die, only counts the last time you died?
That freaking spear guy near one of the towers killed me like three times. Fuck.

Nah I'm just messing. Yes the enemies are going to respawn. This is good and bad, good because you can farm souls and learn how to fight better. Bad because well you have to fight them again.
The retrievable souls you can only have one bloodstain at once on the ground so if you die on the way to retrieval you lose your souls.
There is no shame in rerolling a new character I'd like to point out. If you are going to pump stats early I'd suggest vitality. I didn't put points in vitality until my forth character of screw ups. You should worry about being able to take damage more then you should worry about dealing damage until you get the hang of everything.
I should hopefully have my copy back this week so if you want some coop help I'm more then willing to start a new character and roll with you as a support.
Re: Demon's Souls
Told you it was gonna be brutal as fuck.
The way the system works, yes the enemies re-spawn every single time you die. There are some mini-bosses though that don't respawn. You can only pick up the souls you lost the last time you died. Additionally, every time you die in body form, the enemies in that world are going to become harder. As one sage-like man put it, "Why? Because fuck you is why." System-wise, the reason for this is because when you die in body form the world tendency for that world becomes darker. You can check your world tendency in the menu. World tendency affects multiple things.

The spear guy, that enemy is meant to be picked off later. Don't worry about him just yet. He's guarding a completely optional area.
As for tips, just realize your strengths and weaknesses. If you're good with melee just get in there and start whacking away with the strongest weapon you've got. Always remember to keep your gear repaired as well. If you're not so good with melee, maybe try creating a long range character, magic and arrows. It's not going to be an easy ride, also remember that. It's not a game meant to provide instant gratification. It takes a bit of time and patience to get a hold of the leaning curve and a hold on how to make progress. But once you do, it's extremely rewarding and seeing new areas is very exciting. It's kind of retro feeling in that regard. Just don't feel rushed or lose confidence, stick with it, it'll be worth it.
For tips on the specific area you're in, just make sure to play it safe since your HP is really low right now. Do you have the cling ring yet? That will give you 40% more HP while in soul form and is pretty much essential in many areas. If you don't have it, it's in the tower to the right-hand side past the fight blue-eyed knight wielding the sword. Once you reach the first boss, don't get freaked out or anything because luckily the first boss is a pretty big push over. Save all those firebombs and turpentine you're getting, set them to your item shortcuts before you enter the fog to fight the boss, and just unleash hell on it (it's very weak to fire).

Re: Demon's Souls
The cling ring was awesome. That, and stacking the regeneration ring and regeneration spell, was how I rolled.
Re: Demon's Souls
I did get the cling ring before I called it quits last night. So I haven't run through the level with that yet. I was wondering why my health was cut in half, even after repairing everything I thought something was messed up haha... but I guess not.
I take a lot of damage because I keep wanting to riposte enemies. Trying to get that mechanic down. It's like you have to do it literally when you get hit, not really before it or something.
It's all hard as balls so far but you really feel awesome when you do well.

Re: Demon's Souls
When you're in soul form your health is halved. You can restore your body by beating bosses or using stones of ephemeral eyes. The riposte is pretty tricky, I never used it at all honestly. Too annoying and lots of enemies are immune to it anyway. Just remember to lock on and strafe it up. If you're doing a melee build you should probably be rocking the Bastard Sword right now, you have it right?
If you think 1-1 is hard have fun when you get to the Shrine of Storms. You're given more freedom once you beat the first boss though so there's that to look forward to, you can pick where you want to go. You'll get your body back too.
