2010 - A Year of Overlooked, Underhyped Games

Post by pankakes123 »

I've noticed this for the past few weeks. 2010 saw the release of Halo Reach, Black Ops, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Bioshock 2, and more. It's easy to say it was one of the best years in video game history, but because of this huge load of AAA games, I feel like 2010 had the most overlooked games of this generation.

To name a few:
Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Vanquish
Darksiders
Singularity
Sonic All-Stars Racing

Looking at a list of all 2010 games, there were certainly a lot more too. Do you guys agree that 2010 had the largest amount of great but overlooked games, or am I crazy?

Edit: Epic Mickey and Bit.Trip Runner were replaced with Singularity and Sonic Racing.

I'll be honest, I haven't played any of those games. But Enslaved: Odyssey to the West doesn't look very good to me and Epic Mickey got quite a bit of press AFAIK. I don't see what makes 2010 particularly special - there are always some games that slip under the radar.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
Never heard of it.
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
That one is unhyped for a reason.
Vanquish
This one fits what you're describing. One of Sega's best recent games, and it went virtually unnoticed.
Darksiders
Know nothing about it.
Bit.Trip Runner
This one is plenty well known among the type who would enjoy it.
Epic Mickey
It was meh.

Hmmm... I loved Enslaved and it got quite good reviews. Epic Mickey was hyped, but not the game itself, more just hype that Warren Spector was making it, and it had Mickey Mouse.

Also, the fact that you guys don't even know all of these games proves my point doesn't it? Again, it's fine if you disagree, but I enjoyed all of these games and felt they were overlooked big time.

I really can't see how Epic Mickey could be considered underhyped. It was overhyped if anything, regardless of the reasons. And Bit. Trip. Runner got as much recognition as any indie game could hope for.
I
f you want to see a year with forgotten and/or underhyped gems, look at 2003.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
This game is amazing, one of the best 3rd person adventures / platformers you can find, great characters, great story!

Vanquish
Awesome 3rd person beat/shoot em up, very japanese game.

Darksiders
Solid 3rd person beat em up, i enjoyed what I played, but I borrowed it from a friend and never got to finish it.

Bit.Trip Runner
Like all bit trip games, it is really fun, but gets repetitive really quickly

Epic Mickey
Great platformer with heaps of charm, I never finished it but recently picked up another copy so I can.

All of these games I thought were quite big when they came out, enough so that I played them in 2010/2011

I definitely agree with Singularity, for sure one of the hidden gems for this generation. As far as 2010 being one of the best years for overlooked games, I am not so sure, although it did have its fair share.

Enslaved and Epic Mickey were everywhere when they were released, specially the later. There was quite a bit bit of hype for Mickey but people were wary and the concensus was that neither game was all that interesting. I also remember people severly disliking Enslaved's relationship between the main characters and thinking it was forced.

Bit Trip Runner is very well known too.

I'm pretty sure you can make this assertion about every single year.

I loved Enslaved and Darksiders personally. I also don't think there were underhyped. Perhaps you don't go to the same videogame sites I do?
