actually in mars matrix you can "Aim" the bullets you release by pulling the opposite direction on the joystick. I.E. if you pull straight away from the enimies, then release the black hole, it'll fire the bullets in the enemies direction. Or you can do a quick quarter or half circle and scatter them giga-wing style.
as far as scoring, each of the gold things you pick up increases your multiplier. The more you pick up in a "chain" the more they add to your score multiplier. If you get a long chain, the 100th item would be +100 to your multiplier, which is the key to big scores. That, and very quickly hitting and releasing the black hole in a fraction of a second while swarmed with bullets, so that you can send back a large amount of bullets and re-charge it quickly.

Darius Plus.
Do I like it? I'll let you know after I beat the first level.

Parodius Forever With Me on the Saturn. This game is so hilarious I just wish I knew what the "narrator" during gameplay was saying!

Ha, I'm glad we don't know what he is saying, its distracting enough not being able to understand him
I was playing some Border Down last night, trying to get in the mood for Metal Black without actualy playing it.
Damn, that stage 2 boss is so hard. Took me quite a few runs to get to stage 3 with over 10m.

Border Down always kicks my ass. Though, I'm a lot better at vertical shmups than horizontal ones.

I've finally got the hang of Akai Katana. What was throwing me off was the tutorials talk of switching from "offense" to "defense" and having to hold down the shoot button for the offense. Once I figured this all out, I finished a run through Novice and then had a 17MM score on stage 3 or something in the regular game. I just die a lot.

How are you liking it so far? I've yet to open mine (playing other shooters right now) and was wondering what you're impressions are - graphics, soundtrack and playability.retrosportsgamer wrote:I've finally got the hang of Akai Katana. Re: What shmup are you playing now?
Last night played "Aqua Shark",which is intresting as your not a shark but some type of submarine that looks like a lobster?
To make things even more intresting, the physics behind this shooter is based underwater making controls rather sluggish compared to the speed of screen scrolling and enemy movements.(good thing they added air bubbles,to make sense of the whole thing)
On a brighter note, Aqua Shark also happens to be the ONLY 2d horizontial shmup on Panasonic 3DO! (everything else is 3d arcade/sim or rail shooter)
Once you adjust to the pace of things, the game becomes rather pleasing (for 3do that is).Difficulty is moderate, pattern memorization a must, power ups make or break your run and graphics are more kidsy/tech spec demo of the 3dos possibilities.
Neat little package I must say, (Back to C&C)
EDIT: On the difficulty, game only gives you one life to complete and I think you can earn continues.Theres also a life bar but that gets beat up easily in the wrong situation.Made it as far as level 2 with 4-5 attempts.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.
Re: What shmup are you playing now?
In addition to this month's Metal Black, plan to check out some of the other great shmups on Taito Legends 2, but I've done Darius Gaiden and Rayforce to a point where I'll pass on them for now, so that leaves me with -
Genkiridan
Grid Seeker Project Storm Hammer
Super Space Invaders 91
Space Invaders 95
Gun Frontier
and a few more.
