Just take an angle grinder with a flap-disc to it. Not overtly agressive, and will take off the rust quickly. Use a small wire wheel in a drill to get into the joints where it's welded together.

What kind of wussy ass nonsense is this? Once the grill is heated up it's gonna sanitize it. Sure you might get a little carbon and iron oxide on your meat, but geez. I take it you must think that public grills at parks and things with their rust and such send people to the hospital just for looking at them. I'd say 95% of the time I have grilled meat I have a little rust.
:D The rust adds flavor, justify everyone needs Iron. I just brush with the built up grease on the sides and let it burn a little first. In the Navy we used fifty-five gallon drums cut in half with a cutting torch. A little nuts not knowing if all the chemicals got washed out, but the burgers were tasty.
When my family's BBQ grill (propane) broke several years ago, we made a circle of rocks on the ground in the yard, dumped charcoal in the middle, and set the old grate on top of the rocks. It looked very lazy and slapdash, but it produced some of the best BBQ I've had.

Or he could just... you know... clean the grill after each use.

Yes, this is also a suitable solution.

Smile: I have gotten a great vibe from the general public this Memorial Day. I do not know how much of it is lip service, but there seems to be a general and solemn awareness of those who have lost their lives for their country.

Frown: One thing that bothers me though is that there does not seem to be an awareness or acknowledgement that 'Giving your all' for your country can cost much more than your life. One of the biggest problems with warfare right now is, paradoxically, that the survival rate for combat troops is exponentially higher than it was in any other war. This, in turn, means that many soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who would have died of grievous injuries instead get to live with them for the rest of their lives.

So I am a little perturbed by how low public awareness (and outrage) is in regards to the tens of thousands of men and women who have been crippled for life. I feel that maybe if the populace were more aware of the tragedy of 'giving your all' but not dying, we might hold our leaders more accountable for how they use our armed forces.

Just my $.02.

No way, the gristle is preservative and flavor, though it might bring in additional flavors from bugs. I lost part of my soul when my old Char Broil got a bee swarm and the wife bug sprayed it. Well the bottom was ready to fall out anyways, took a few burns to get the new grill properly seasoned.

@ Flake - Thanks for bringing that up, so many forget what today is for. I have a flag up, always have high respect for anyone Miltary and Public Emegency Personnel. One of the reason why we can enjoy the freedom of the Barbecue.

At least in my area, ads trying to raise awareness of that stuff play rather regularly on the radio. It seems to though that a lack of concern for those wounded but not killed as always been too low, throughout history. Most people don't even want to have to concern themselves with cripples, because it's inconvenient. When someone's dead, you pay your lip service and move on. Easy. When they're crippled you have to deal with it every day, and that's a lot harder.

That's a very succinct way to sum up what I took three paragraphs to say.

It bothers me because I see it as just another way that war is compartmentalized. No draft to staff the services, no specific taxes to fund the conflict, and a mental block on acknowledging that so many people come home broken...no wonder our politicians are able to involve us in conflicts that most people would not support if they were forced to think about it.

But I don't want to start a political debate or anything. I just hope that everyone thinks about the poor men and women who are light a limb or two after their time in service as well as those who are not coming home at all.

A little bit onto what Flake was saying, I have a bit of a story to add.

At the State FFA convention last year for Texas, we had a severally wounded veteran come talk to us about leadership, and such. He had been burned over 80% of his body and was missing multiple body parts. (This is the same person you see in many of the Facebook posts asking for likes, sadly.) He gave us his speech, and his wife came out, and we gave them a standing ovation. The state officers came out and thanked him, and the president stuck out his hand to shake. The man began to cry. He shook the president's hand, along with the rest of the officers'. Later, when he was asked by a student why he started to cry, he said very few people have actually tried to shake his hand since his accident, and it made him extremely proud to see that these FFA members were willing to.

Just a bit of a story I had.

Luke wrote:If ebay did same day delivery, that would be an option. I'm having a cookout tonight, and the grill grate doesn't look sanitary. Might purchase a grill basket as an alternative.

I'm solutions oriented, I'll figure something out.
If you needed it today, then yeah that wouldn't help, but as I looked through the list, many of them shipped for free, so if you ever needed one just as a backup that would still be a good option.
