Hm, didn't know Quake on the Saturn was actually pretty nice. Might have to get it sometime...

N64 is like a party game king. Can't think of another system with as many awesome fun 4-player titles. It's actually got a handful of RPGs too believe it or not, but most of them kinda suck. Ogre Battle 64 is pretty nice though (or so I've heard).

Yeah, Ogre Battle 64 is one of the few games on the Nintendo 64 that isn't a complete shitpile. It's hard for younger people to empathize with my n64 hate but you have to see it from the perspective from someone who is old enough to remember when the n64 was new.

Every n64 owner I ever met was unbelievably smug and the marketing was smug too. Get N or get out? What the Hell kind of BS was that?!

Plus Nintendo had a real arrogant marketing department, they insulted RPG fans, claimed CD's were inferior to cartridges, claimed that they have quality over quantity even though 99 percent of everything ever released on the N64 was complete trash.

Terrible terrible system. Loved it when the Dreamcast came out so I can laugh in all the n64 fanboys' faces.

I grew up with the n64 and I loved it. But now that I have gotten older, I realize that most of the games for it were not that great. It makes me angry that I sold my 60+ games to EB for next to nothing, only because it would cost a fortune to buy all of them again. Most of the games were just..... balls.

Quake on the Saturn is a solid game. Don't get too excited over the prospect of a Goldeneye/Turok control scheme. The view is spring loaded and returns to center when you release the analog nub. It isn't a true "free look". You are also stuck with inverted look. It works much the same as the "Jevon's Control" in Duke Nukem 3D on the Saturn. Don't expect to do any fancy vertical shooting unless you have an inhumanly steady left thumb.

Don't expect to rocket jump, either. Actually, I'm not even sure if the game engine would allow you to rocket jump. It definitely doesn't allow for bunny hopping. It's basically the Slave engine in very convincing Quake skin.

The graphics are pretty solid. Definitely better than the N64 version, IMO. The textures are very close to the PC originals, pre-Open GL.

Probably the best feature the Saturn has to offer is the original Nine Inch Nails soundtrack. I was totally shocked when I started the game up. The tracks are red booked so you can jam to it in CD player... if you still have one.

Oh and there's no multiplayer, so I hope you enjoy Quake's single player. A lot.

Seriously, this.

You hate the console for having smug marketing? Fucking EVERYTHING back then had really arrogant and smug marketing.

I get it if you're not into the (relatively) puny library, especially if you aren't into Nintendo's first party offerings or all the rareware stuff, but "99 percent complete trash"? Mischief Makers, Beetle Adventure Racing, Snowboard Kids 2, and Space Station Silicon Valley certainly were anything but "complete trash".

Curious, what ARE the 5 games you keep referring to when you say the system only has 5 good games? Ogre Battle is one apparently.

The N64's biggest problem was memory. Memory memory memory. It was quite a powerful system and in some regards a much simpler, more elegant design than even the Playstation, but it has a bizarrely small texture limit and the ROM size is also a major limitation. Games that didn't need high-quality textures tended to be pretty good. Anything serious that needed the detail of quality textures tended to fall flat.
