I was just wondering since many people here on racketboy have multiple systems. Does anybody play or buy games on the original system the game came out for regardless of the price of the same game cheaper or more expensive than other consoles?. I mean sonic came out for the genesis but we have sonic the hedgehog on xbox live and psn and wii and sonic classics on multi platforms. So do you guys play it on the platforms or the way it was meant for the genesis?
I am a proud owner of a dreamcast again. I bought marvel vs capcom 2, soul calibur, phantasy star online ver2, sonic adventure and other games that came out on different platforms. Now itmay have been cheaper to get the games on dlc on xbox or psn but for me playing crazy taxi or marvel vs capcom 2 on the dreamcast..... iT'S JUST WORTH IT.
I plan to get street fighter 3rd strike for the system and I did just have a chance to get it online and or xbox but I want it on the system it came out for.
Does anyone here feel the same way as I do? Or am I just wasting my money. For me i would rather spend a few extra bucks for the original than the updated version of a title

Im like you man, I have Shenmue 2 on the Xbox and much prefer to play it on the DC rather than the Xbox ver.
As for the fighters... it varies, even though its really good on the original console, it just lacks the online play if you really care about that.

I'm a bit odd in this, but my general rule is to get the game for the original system. I don't own and likely will never own Sonic Mega Collection or Mega Man X Anthology or such collections, because I prefer the originals. If I'm going to have a bunch of Genesis games on a PS2 disk, why not just emulate? Obviously, my exceptions are for arcade games, but also for me Neo Geo games. I don't think I'll get a Neo Geo (either an AES or MVS) any time soon, so I'm happy having Metal Slug Anthology.
If a game was rereleased or remade for another console, I sometimes consider getting that additionally, especially if there's something really cool on the new one that isn't there for the old one, but graphics don't bother me at all, so I don't mind usually just having the older version. I'm still blown away by Sonic Adventure, so why do I need Sonic Adventure DX? But Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection contains the after years, so I own that in addition to the SNES cart.

Not going to list all the games and for which system i prefer, but the SNES version of U.N. Squadron is far superior to the Arcade version.
Re: games that were meant to be played on the right system
I like to go original, but the convenience of having it on other systems wins me over too, particularly if its a favorite game.
Since you mentioned the original Sonic games, I can say that I own them on a variety of formats, including the original Genesis carts, Sonic Mega Collection, the Xbox live individual releases, and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
In short, it depends on the game for me. Sometimes I like having multiple versions, sometimes I seek out the best version, whatever the qualifications for "best" might be.

Why yes, yes I have. Here's just a few:
Super Mario World
Sonic Adventure
Super Mario 64
Halo

Halo

Definitely go for the original. With anthologies and collections you don't always get the real deal. It seems difficult for any Sonic port to play like the Genesis classic.

I'd say $$$ is the biggest factor really.
With a game like Sonic the Hedgehog it's easy enough to get the original and play on the Genesis.
Then take a game like Metal Slug... definitely need an anthology for that.

Like o.pwuaioc, I refuse to play Mega Man or Sonic games except for the original releases. And that's my philosophy in general with games, unless the re-release is noticeably improved over the original. You can tell that's how I think by the fact that I own a SNES (just about everything good on it has been ported somewhere).

I prefer original versions but sometimes an anthology is just much easier. So I own the Mega Man Anniversary Collection; I didn't have an NES at the time and it seemed a lot easier than tracking down a console and several games - nowadays I'd probably be inclined to just get the carts. I don't own a Neo Geo but owning ports/collections of SNK games is a LOT more friendly on the wallet.
Download-only versions are my least favorite though, unless they add something like online multiplayer.
