If there's something I love, is reading about how a game was made, what happened to it and how it turned out how it currently is. Tales of the beginning of Magic: The Gathering, how AD&D came to be or what changed in each version of Vampire: The Masquerade are simply amazing reads and even if I don't really want to play the game, I love knowing about them and I'm sure you do too.
So what about linking or talking about this stuff here? It's fun! You can recommend books, websites or just start talking about something that looks interesting. This thread is for you JT!
I will post some stuff soon, I don't want to squash the discussion.

I remember this being posted before: It's an awesome article about the making of the first Crash Bandicoot game on Playstation.

There's also Grant Kirkhope's page on the compositions he made for 'Project Dream', an SNES (and then later moved to N64) game which eventually became Banjo Kazooie. He talks a bit about the game's development and the drastic changes it went through, it's pretty fascinating.

Is this what you're talking about? I really love this kind of stuff.

Our own HappehLemons had a very interesting OOT documentary: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... ocumentary

Speaking of HappehLemons, where did he go?

I always thought the evolution of StarCraft was really interesting: http://sclegacy.com/art/34-general/270- ... -evolution

Eric Chahi gave a very interesting talk about how he single-handedly created Another World (aka Out of This World). Here is the video:

Actually, you should know about the GDC vault. There are tons of talks from various designers discussing the creation of their games:

For example, if you want to hear about the early coin-op arcade days, here's a talk about the development of Gauntlet with a talk by Ed Logg from Atari's golden age.

He said that Space Invaders was such a huge hit in Japan, that there was a shortage of yen because the games held so much of people's money.

I love stuff like this for games, movies, anything. I always like hearing what went through the creators' heads, or stories about how a well loved piece of s work only came about because of a creative solution to limitations.

I don't know if I'll be shunned for this because it's an interview with a video game music composer, but I was reading it a while back. It's Miki Higashino, and before reading the article I had only really known her from the first two Gensou Suikoden titles, but I found out that she also did the music for the original Gradius, which is another game I love.

awesome. I love stuff like this. You should listen to the podcast Top Score with Emily Reese, pierrot. Each episode she interviews various game composers and plays clips of their work. Generally very insightful.pierrot wrote:I don't know if I'll be shunned for this because it's an interview with a video game music composer, but I was reading it a while back.
