My DMG-01, the first console/handheld I ever owned, is quite battered by now, having been tossed around between four siblings for more than a decade. However, I do still play games on it, if purely for the sake of nostalgia.
The backlit screen to me is not an issue because I'm used to having to sit next to a window to read books. It doesn't make any difference to me if what I'm holding is a display or written text because I can easily see it.
Obviously, once it's dark, I have to use the lamp on my nightstand to read/play. And this is where I don't actually like my GBA SP: Because it's backlit, I've always played it in the dark (this started when I was younger and had to hide my late-night gaming, you've all been there). And with the backlit screen being the only source of light, it irritated my eyes to no end after just about a half hour.
Since these days, I only read/play during daytime, the screen on the DMG-01 is perfectly fine for me, and I appreciate the bulk as well. However, I am contemplating importing a Gameboy Light, even if just for the sake of having a more rare/unique Gameboy (the screen is irrelevant because I already have an SP).
Actually playing on a Gameboy?
Re: Actually playing on a Gameboy?
I've had one before and I may again... but I loved playing the Gameboy pocket. Just something about black and white that screams "play me!"
Re: Actually playing on a Gameboy?
I still use my original Game Boy - it's the only one I can play Tetris on without making my hands hurt!
I've also been playing Pokemon Crystal on my GBC recently, mainly because my SP is dead and the charger has disappeared without a trace...

Re: Actually playing on a Gameboy?
Unless you want to play it on the go, stick with a Super Game Boy for GB games and a Game Boy Player for GBC and GBA games. All you'll miss out on is rumble and motion controls in the 5 or so games that use them.
Re: Actually playing on a Gameboy?
I think the Gameboy Pocket is the best for getting the original "look and feel" of a Gameboy game. I have such fond memories of the DMG model growing up as a kid, but I always loved my silver Gameboy Pocket. I really need to get another silver one in good condition.

I also love playing on my GBA SP NES edition. I loved the design of this version, but really loved the newer SP backlit models. So a few years ago I decided to merge the best of both worlds. Here is my NES edition GBA SP with the backlit screen:

Re: Actually playing on a Gameboy?
yes, actually:)
i don't think i can add too much to this thread - even if have the whole GB line - but there are two things most people don't care (i posted this some days ago into "other platforms"):
-Pockets come in two versions basically. With or without power indicator led.
-This is the age Nintendo started manufacturing their products in China. But still not all of them so a made in Japan model 2 (led) is not so hard to find.
I love the Pocket and have many of them. I have a GB Light Famitsu Skeleton edition and this is the most beautiful piece of hardware junk i ever came across. Unfortunately the screen is the worst in the series.
