Pikmin 2 Wii coming to North America! Buuuuut...

Post by Opa Opa »

It's coming in this ugly-ass box.

Here's the first Pikmin Wii port box for comparison.

If you're like me and your entire Wii collection is black label (..err.. white label..), then your collection will always look more appealing if you keep it that way. Throw an ugly "Nintendo Selects" in there and the aesthetics are ruined.

Now I understand the reasoning behind the whole "Greatest Hits" type of production. A game is made and it sells really well; later on Company X makes another production run, offers it at a cheaper price, and capitalizes on an older investment.

But in the case of New Play Control: Pikmin 2, why on Earth are you not offering the white label?? You skip ahead to "Greatest Hits"? There's no justification to do so! That implies that the game already sold well enough to warrant another production. But it hasn't, at least, not in North America. Or are you counting the GameCube "Player's Choice" as justification?

All my complaining may sound silly but it is a tad frustrating when my entire collection is black/white label and then a game comes out, that I may be potentially interested in purchasing, and they slap a tasteless, eye-burning red label on it.

Aren't the 'red label' games in reversible covers or something?

Oh well, if nothing else, I'm sure TheCoverProject will have a nice 'white label' cover available pretty quickly.

This is going to be one of those titles years from now that people question or ask the seller for the non-Nintendo Selects version.

What a pain - but to be fair, the original "new play control" cases were pretty ugly too.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii already ruined the whites-only party on my Wii shelf.

(there might be a better way to phrase that...)

If it bugs you that much, I'm sure someone will make a "standard" cover, such as this.

At least the "Nintendo Selects" covers look somewhat classy, unlike this.
My games for sale: Racketboy, Amazon, eBay
My systems: NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube (Game Boy Player), Wii / Game & Watch: Ball, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP (x2), Nintendo DSi / Genesis (Sega CD, 32X), Saturn / Game Gear / PlayStation, PlayStation 2 / Xbox / Mac (Windows PC) / iPhone, iPad

Okay, apparently these "Nintendo Selects" have a white spine. So maybe I could stomach purchasing this release so long as it keeps my Wii shelf white. However, that still doesn't explain why it's being called a Nintendo Select. Maybe it's just to identify it as a budget title?

Never heard of that. Then again, I haven't purchased a red label game yet.

I will give the Pikmin 2 case some credit; it does show more of the original box art.

Box is white. Spine looks fine. Only difference is a little emblem on the bottom. I personally like the look of the Nintendo Selects series (especially for PunchOut). Best looking greatest hits type thing I can think of, and one of the few where they don't screw with the disc art. That way you can print out a new cover if you want and be set.

The cover is Smugly (Super Ugly), but what of the gameplay? I have held off on the Wii versions of Pikmin for two reasons. Maybe Wii Pikmin 2 fixed some of the aim and control issues of the first Wii remake?

1. Action Replay - I know cheating is for wimps but an easy option to to unlock everything.
2. Control - The remote allows instant pointing, but loses "memory" of the purple reticule aim point.

Does the first Wii Pikmin remake have the option to not use motion controls?

No, just the Wii controls. The pointing aspect has both good and bad qualities about it.
