Cyberbots for me. That game blew me away when I imported it for my Saturn a few years ago.

Also, I'm surprised we haven't seen more interest in Red Earth in this thread.

Well, there's only two ways to play Warzard/Red Earth... Makes it a little inaccessible.

I like cartoony, over-the-top fighters. For this reason Ready to Rumble Boxing remains one of my favorite fighting games. WWF Smackdown games on PS1 were lots of fun in their time.

Primal Fury was an arcade game that I loved in the nineties. It was so ridiculously violent and offensive that my eleven-year-old self couldn't play enough of it. There were even some "concerened parent" groups trying very hard to ban this game. It's a shame that no home port of this game ever faithfully replicated the arcade original. I've never gotten this to run in MAME either. What a great over-the-top fighter. I hope it's not lost to history.

Here's one more cartoony, over-the-top fighter I wasn't expecting to like: Sonic the Fighters. I picked up the Sonic Gems collection for Gamecube mostly to play Sonic CD. I flipped through the other Sonic games on the menu, and saw Sonic the Fighters. I expected this to be crummy, half-assed attempt to shoehorn popular characters into a fighting game. Cynicism is a possible side effect of being a sonic fan. I was delighted to find that Sonic the Fighters is first and foremost a really fun fighting game. The cartoony character models work well. It's a short game, but I had a blast while playing. I recommend Sonic the Fighters if you like your fighting games cartoony and over-the-top.

I think you might mean Primal Rage

The game has been digitally preserved, but there are emulation issues still :(

Samsonlonghair, you might like Virtua Fighter Kids on the Saturn, then. It's definitely in a major series (VF) but I figured I'd offer you the suggestion since you liked Sonic The Fighters.

I've never played it before but it's on my to do list but can you even run it in mame? I tried to set it up once but was missing files and whole googling for them I thought I read that the game didn't work in mame.

Oh and this thread needs some plasma sword. I could not remember the name of that game for the life of me. Had to go hit up the hidden gems article to get the name.

You gotta run it through Nebula and not MAME:

I like Red Earth, but my favorite not mainstream fighters are
2d = Arm Joe
3d = Power Stone 2

I am not familiar with Arm Joe. Tell me more?

I gotta say, I actually prefer PowerStone 1 to 2. It had just come out in arcades when I was in Japan and I was just as good as the Japanese players I encountered in those early months.

I think my fave 2D might actually be the Kabuki (Tengai Makyou) ACD fighter on the PC Engine.

Favorite 3D I'm kinda torn on... Not really sure on that one as I've not played much outside VF and derivatives. I know I don't like SF EX.

Arm Joe is a fighter for the PC that was made as part of a competition concerning strange game ideas. It is a fighting game based on Les Miserables. It is worth checking out, as it is a fun fighter to pull out for friends. If I remember correctly, I really like the generic French policeman.
