Progressive Scan on PS2

Post by kidsampson »

During a recent move to a new apartment, I discovered a box of stuff my old roommate had left behind. Among other things, I found a VGA box inside, which accepts S-Video and AV inputs. I connected it to my PC monitor and tried out both my Wii and PS2 and was surprised to see that both worked extremely well. Unlike my Dreamcast which doesn’t properly display 2D graphics on a VGA monitor, my PS2 had no problem doing so at all.

After playing around with this for a bit last night, I began wondering about those PS2 games I have that ask if I’d like to change the display to Progressive Scan. Would this now make a difference or work now that I have it connected to my CRT monitor? If it matters, I currently connect my PS2 to the VGA box with standard component cables. The box is of course connected to the monitor through a VGA cable.

I’m not at home right now to try this, but are all PS2’s cable of this output? Will I need a different cable other than those I am using to connect the system? I've always just used a second-hand television that only accepts coaxial input, so I've never been much interested in this stuff, much less informed about it.

if you have component cables going into a hdtv it wont make a difference. you might see a loss in quality the more connections you have before the final video output. if you dont have a hdtv and want a progressive expierence then you just scored!

No HDTV, just some old Sanyo that only accepts coaxial and my old CRT computer monitor I have it hooked up to now. And I wouldn't have even done that had my RF modulator not crapped out on me. :) I feel like I'm kicking it old school. And now that I looked up the terms, I'm not even using component cables, but rather composite cables - the standard AV type that ships with the PS2.

You must use component cables for the PS2 to be able to output the progressive signal, and the tv must support progressive scan. The monitor you have most likely supports it, but using composite is your weak link. It won't work.

What do you mean DC doesn't properly display 2d? Isnt the problem really that it does properly display them in the pixelated form that they actually are and ps2 doesnt because you arent actually seeing any higher of a resolution?
