Ha ha, of course you like Freya  She may as well be Kains wife.

I didn't find her dynamic at all to be honest, at least not compared to Stiener, Vivi, Dagger (although when her character stops growing she does become quite bland), and even the less involved characters like Quina and Eiko.

I did like that you could draw lines from each character in IX to almost every Final Fantasy character before it. It really was a diverse cast, although I thought Amarant was really dull. Quina is the shit though, even if people hate her.

When you said "playable", you made me remember that, obviously, Beatrix is the most badass character in that game

Nothing against Kain, I just think Vivi is the shizznit. I love the way he grows, and not only affects himself, but Steiner as well. I love his fights with the Black Mages, and him discovering himself in a more innocent way than Kain or Shadow.
Vivi <3 <3 <3 <3

The only FF character I liked enough to buy a collectible of. This plushie (image taken from google cause I am too lazy to get out my camera)

I think that was the last time we had a Final Fantasy character REALLY grow.....and the only time from the PS1 era if you ask me.

Storywise, no doubt. But if we're talking about pure badassery...

That's exactly why I said "playable". ;)

Ah, I get what you meant. Yeah, story aside, Freya was easily the most badass playable character.

I had hopes that I would be able to play as Beatrix that whole game... and I am kinda glad they didn't give her to ya. Lets her keep that charm.

@Zero: Now that you have mentioned it, Vivi really does change more than any ps1 era FF character. I had never thought about that! The more I think about VII from a tecnical standpoint, the less I like it (although nostalgia will always be there, so I still love it)

I was really amazed how mature his writing is. I mean most of the other FF character's conflict is just teenage anime emo drama.

Both Cloud and Squal's "drama" is pathetic. Yet here we have a small child, who has to come to terms with
A) The fact that he is the prototype for a manufactured weapon
and
B) That he is going to die sometime soon
these are really well handled in this game. Cloud was just used for some lab experiments and he went into emo shit lockdown. Vivi on the other hand acted how you'd expect a well written character to act. At first he was afraid, but slowly and with the help of the others and the events of the game, he came to terms with his destiny and tried to make the best of what he was given. Which in my opinion is one of the best messages a story like this can tell.

Really I think without Vivi FF IX would have been half the game it is. I mean the more I think about it, the more I realize that all the memorable moments and dialogue sequences involved Vivi.

EDIT:

Oh and even though I LOVED FF VIII and to this day it's one of my favorite FF games, Squall's drama was just PATHETIC. Of all the things that could have traumatized him (being an orphan, being cast into war as a teenager, being an anti social dick who would never get laid in a real life situation) his sister (one of the 6 siblings he has mind you) leaving was the thing that broke him? Bullshit

You prefer 12 and 13 over 7?! I played 12 for like 14-12 hours and quit because it was so utterly unintresting (dont get me started on the voice acting!). From what I've read so far, it seems that 13 is over 9000 times worse than 12!
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Yes. I actually loved the voice acting in 12, and the gameplay and the story. People probably hate it cause it was too big a departure from previous games.

I liked 13 too :)

FF7 was just meh. Not bad but not good either. 6 > 9 > 8 > 12 > 13 > 7 for me

While I like it, I can completely understand not liking FFVII. It's actually really crappy if you look at every individual factor, but somehow manages to be much greater than the sum of all its parts.

However, if you like older RPGs but want to try something with the flair of a PS1 RPG, definitely give FFIX a try.

Also, poke VIII with a stick. I really like it

... if by the third time you still find yourself not getting into the game, then what's the point? People go on how great Ocarina of Time is but I just can't get into it! Seriously, I want to like the game but it's not for me - I do, however, adore A Link to the Past :)

There are just too many games worth playing for you to sit around trying to force enjoyment out of one. Damn it, there isn't enough time for this sort of tomfoolery!
