What are some great fan-made games of established series out there? I want to learn more about them.
I just finished Metroid Confrontation which is a short, yet well made Metroid game that uses Super Metroid style graphics. Very fun, yet short experience.
I've also read about and seen screenshots of this mysterious, yet amazing looking fan made Metroid game called Metroid: SR-388, but I can't find a download for it anywhere or any information about carts being sold of it. Anyone know where I can find this game?
I also started Legend of Zelda: Mystery of Solarus, which I'm hopelessly stuck on the third dungeon. I've beaten the dungeon, and I've gotten 1 of the dungeon items (dash-boots), but I can't figure out how to get the 2nd dungeon item which I apparantly need to move on to the next dungeon. And the only decent walkthrough I found on YouTube (the "Let's Play" series), doesn't go that far into the game. Quite frustrating.
So instead I'm about to start The Legend of Zelda: Return of the Hylian which looks pretty good. Both it and Mystery of Solarus use A Link to the Past graphics and both games take place shortly after A Link to the Past.
I've also checked out Mario Forever, but it just isn't good without controller support. Mario needs the type of control that a d-pad commands. Which is a shame, because the game looks awesome otherwise.
Abobo's Big Adventure is the king of these, that I've played at least. It's the ULTIMATE NES tribute game. Soooo freaking fun, and the game has such a great sense of humor, I found myself literally laughing out loud multiple times. What's great about it, is that each level plays like a different NES game. There's a Double Dragon level, an underwater Super Mario Bros. level, a Legend of Zelda dungeon level, a Contra level, a Mike Tyson's Punch-Out level, even a Balloon Fight level.
Please, tell me about some other great fan made games out there in the retro style (preferably free-to-download ones).

Try the Chrono Trigger hacks: Flames of Eternity and Prophet's Guile.
