Talk me into sticking with FF VII

Post by AppliCotton »

Two days ago I set out to play Final Fantasy VII on the PSX for the third time. That is, for the third time this year I tried to get into it and not give up after about four hours. I want to like this game. I can appreciate the insane amount of detail Square put into every piece of random litter lying around those slums, it truly is the Citizen Kane of video games...

...but fuck is it annoying as shit. First, the stupid "mini-games". No, I don't want to do squats, no, I don't want to sneak around pillars so the guards don't see me, no, I don't want to jump from a ledge in an attempt to catch a swinging wire... Does this shit ever end? Is this part of the intro, or is the entire fucker undercut with senseless button mashing games? Does anybody actually think any of that makes for a better game? Compare Taloon's chapter in DQIV... if you're gonna waste my time, that's how you do it!

Second, how fucking long is the intro? Again, my hat goes off to Square for all the detail they put into Midigar, but I'd appreciate it a lot more if I weren't trapped there for what seems like forever. I mean come on, every Japanese game that bothers to have a story uses the Gundam Z plot template, we know what's going to happen, just spit it out so I can go grind. Phantasy Star: you select New Game, watch a cut scene lasting less than two minutes, BAM! you're grinding and exploring. My kinda game.

These are my main two complaints, but thus far they encompass about 90% of the gameplay. So community, why should I bother pressing on?

I think you're the first person i've ever seen complaining about those things. I mean lots of people dislike the game, but they usually site a strong dislike of the story or the materia system, not the various minigame type things you run into.

Midgar comprises like the first 5 hours of the game...

Actually if you're talking about swinging wires, I'm guessing you're at the Shinra building right now? You're almost out of Midgar then.

No. Give up, it's a good game but not that good... and if you don't like it now you're not going to change your mind after putting a few more hours in.

Play part VI instead. 8)

Yeah I'll have to agree with this. I love the game, but if it doesn't grab you from the get-go It's probably not going to change your mind later.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Thanks.

And I got FF VI the first day it came out in the US! Went To Toys R' Us bright n' early! One of the last games I bought, after that I slowly quit playing games until last year. I wasn't too into it though. IV will always be the best in my book.

No, I won't talk you into it. ;) If you're not feeling it, walk away. Find something you wanna play. If someday you get the itch, play FF7 then.
And seriously, if you haven't finished FF6, do it nauuuw!

I say stick with it, try to finish disc one before giving up. Once you are out of Midgar, it does feel more enjoyable. But there are more minigames ahead.
I guess it's like the way FF XIII opens up after 25 hours...oh, actually it's nothing like that.

It seems like you were far more ready to hate this game than enjoy it.

No, that's not the case at all, I'm too old to be hating for hating's sake. As I noted above, I didn't play anything but Minesweeper between 1995 and 2011. Long story short, I got a modded PSone and FFVII was very high on my to play list because, well, it's widely regarded as the best in the series and as one of the best games ever period. That and that the main character has a huge sword with a tiny hilt is literally all I knew about this game before I popped it in my PS last year.

And besides, I really wish I could get into "modern" rpgs, I'm running out of retro RPGs, and replaying FFI with a party of all black belts isn't as fun as you'd imagine... Those fuckers can't wear armor, ya know :/
