When Sheldon talks about Schrodinger's Cat he actually knows what the hell he's talking about.

Funny that you should pick Schrödinger's cat as an example, as it's one of the few examples of higher level of physics that the average person is aware of, like E=MC^2.

Until this thread, I never heard of Schrodinger's Cat. I don't think it's anywhere near widely known as E=MC^2.

I've heard of the cat thing many many times. And I still don't understand it.

Anyway, a lot of jokes/shows require a specific knowledge of something to understand. Family guy does the same thing pretty often, dragging out a joke about one specific topic. And if you don't know anything about that topic, most of the joke is lost on you. It's basically an inside joke. When you're in on it, it can range from hilarious to somewhat-smile-worthy, otherwise, it's probably not funny at all.

But overall, I didn't find that to be my problem with community. I know it's become a bit more geared at those types of jokes recently, but the episodes I caught weren't really hard to comprehend, just not particularly funny to me. Whatever, everyone has a different sense of humor. I wasn't trying to make any specific point on whether it's funny or not. If you think it is, you should keep watching it. I stick with Parks and Rec, always sunny, and Louie (which is sometimes more twistedly dark than funny)

Schrödinger's Cat isn't exactly supposed to make sense. It's basically a thought experiment as an analogy for super-imposition of multiple states on a single object (in the thought experiment a cat, in reality quantum particles). From my basic understanding (very basic) of quantum physics, basically super tiny particles act really bizarre, e.g. being in more than one place at once. It's pretty crazy stuff, and if you have any curiosity for physics and natural phenomena, it's worth looking into. Also check out the double-slit experiment, it'll blow your mind!

But back on topic, Community's fantastic! And they had a videogame episode that didn't seem to be BS like a lot of videogame based episodes of shows are. It seemed like the people who did it really knew the material. Winger's Mega Man jump? Nice touch!

Oh, I thought it was something along the lines of "if a tree falls in the forest". Suggesting that the cat didn't explode or whatever until someone actually looked in the box. I do have an interest in that stuff actually, my brain however is not compatible with that interest.

I think I saw a double slit experiment once, I'd post it here but we have rules against that kind of content.

mAn, i love community. i also hate the big bang theory. to be fair i've never sat down and really watched it. it just has a laugh track and i have a bad (well, its not bad to me) habit of instantly and viciously hating any sitcom with a laugh track. why waste precious seconds TELLING AN AUDIENCE WHEN TO LAUGH when you could be using those seconds to you know, make actual jokes. arrested development, parks and community prove this effortlessly. they cram so many jokes and references into those shows, its impossible to see why anyone would waste their time for canned laughter.

i digress. community is fantastic, the 8-bit episode ruled. all the high concept episodes are always a treat. plus, theres great writing and character development throughout. even though about 40% of the episodes don't really need the community college backdrop, its still wonderful and theres too much put into it to not appreciate it. but, i guess its not for everyone.

The problem with the vocabulary in the Big Bang Theory is that the use of those high-culture words doesn't match the rest of the writting. There's a weird mixture of simple constructions with high brow words and it looks forced and fake, like people who try to look more eloquent than they are by shoehorning a word or two in each phrase.

Here's how an eloquent person talks:


Tone, good construction, good choices of words. Not saying "conumdrum" or quoting the second Wikipedia line on Schrodinger's Cat.


The problems BBT has aren't limited to speech, rather, speech is a symptom of the ideas behind the show, that only understand the topics the show is supposed to cover. Making a "wood for sheep" joke and claiming how quirky you are is not only uninteresting and annoying but shows that the character is nothing but a posseur, that the shupposed geekdom is as real as the laughter in the show and that anyone who is geek enough to understand the joke is going to be embarrassed to death.


But if it has a problem, it's that it isn't funny.

And, brother, that's a rather big problem.
