I actually recommend getting a duo r from doujindance on ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-D ... 2c652ab792

He goes through and cleans the console, also replaces caps, cd lens and does the rgb mod. he also adds a switch to go from pc engine to tg16 mode to play games from both regions. This is what I have and it is definitely worth what you pay for :)

I also agree with the idea of forgoing the TG-16 and going exclusively with a Japanese Duo. That's what I did. I wouldn't mind playing Neutopia in English, but my Japanese level is to the point where I have begun playing Japanese games with studying and using dictionaries to understand what's going on.

I also vouch for hit-Japan as a great way to rapidly increase your PC Engine library. His service is excellent. However, if Tildius is right about doujindance, then that must be a great way to go. It's strange though, as I thought that selling modded consoles on eBay was a violation of policies?

I think their policies mainly target consoles that have been modded to play backups/copies, I've seen plenty of people sell AV modded consoles and stuff on eBay so I don't think they care about that. I actually sold an AV modded DINA 2-in-1 on eBay and I never got any flack about it.

PC Engine for hardware compatibility. More taps and pads floating around in the world for the PCE than the TG.

Tell me if you know what time it is in here...

That's odd, at least for me. The first time I lived in Japan, over ten years ago, I used to buy Super Famicom and Saturn games and sell them on eBay (back before competition got fierce). eBay closed some of my auctions just because I mentioned in the game's description that you either need a Japanese console, or have a modded system to play imports. They killed several auctions I had up at once, so I had to re-list them. Ever since then, when selling a Japanese game on eBay, I've adopted the disclaimer, "You must have a system that can play Japanese imports. If you do not know if your system can play Japanese imports or not, then you probably don't have one, so don't bother to bid!"

i'm also hunting one on ebay but i'm not interested in the CD games so a Core Grafx would do. JP games are way cheaper and most of them have english text.
The only interesting CD game to me is Rondo but the price is incredible and probably not worth.

Well, if you get a PC Engine or Core Grafx unit you can always add CD capabilities later. You probably will want to add CD capabilities at some point as some of the best games are on SuperCD. The base PCE is so low on main RAM that many HuCards are a bit constrained. The CD games use read/write space as a cache, so many CD games use tricks that, quite simply, work better than they do on HuCard.

a technical fact never makes a game superior or inferior to the other when we talk about retro (and looks like we do:)
btw what cd games would you recommend?

You are correct, of course, but it can be argued that systems with fewer technical limitations do allow game developers to be more flexible with their ideas. I think the PCE/TG has some great games in all formats.

There are a ton of great games, and there are even some articles and guides here at the site worth reading on the matter.

my opinion on cd games based upon mainly the racketboy articles so i thought you have some other tip. i keep searching for a nice coregrafx - it seems $40+shipping is a good price. i may reconsider the cd addon but i already have a cd gimmick from that time called sega cd
