Haha. So Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Punch Out? Does that qualify?

And for the record I'm not poking fun. Just having fun.

I opted to get the US plain blue & white SMS Power Strike as well as the color Euro one even though the cover is the only difference. The cart is exactly the same.

I didn't realize how many variants of NES games were there until I started viewing some people's collections on RFgeneration and seeing the lists that had added info on variants. Insane I tell you.

Although not quite as prevalent, there's also some SNES variants as well, like the Majesco re-releases. I had no idea I even had any in my collection until I looked it up. Turns out my copies of Contra III and Super Castlevania IV are of the Majesco re-release variety. However, unless I were to find original pressings of both games for a decent price, I'm not gonna worry about it, I'm perfectly happy with the copies I have. I also don't care too much about the fact that my copies of F-Zero and Tetris/Dr. Mario are the Player's Choice Million Seller editions (I kinda like that gold color). Oh and lastly, whodathunk that Maximum Carnage also had a gray version?

But hopefully, not to get off-topic here, I don't care too much about the variants in my quest for SNES completion (or just finding games in general). I just want to make sure I have the games.

Yes. I consider those different games, and I have a copy of each. (I have KO'd Mike Tyson, but not Mr. Dream...I should give that a shot at some point.)

Once I get further into my SMS collection, I may consider variants. It is hard to find complete games for it in the wild, however; so, I will likely stop once I have a complete set.

I have some Majesco variants as well. I am not real picky about the rear labels on my SNES carts, and I am not trying to obtain a complete SNES set. Accordingly, the Majesco re-releases do not bother me. I do opt for original over "Million Seller" editions, however. I have not done research on this, but - if I recall correctly - there are 3+ label variants of Super Star Wars and several other games. I think that it would be interesting to collect SNES variants, but I do not think that they are as "storied" as some of the NES variants (such as the aforementioned "Mike Tyson's Punch Out" vs. "Punch Out" and grey vs. black Tengen games).

I would like to pick up a grey Maximum Carnage at some point, however. That game, in addition to Doom and Killer Instinct, looks strange sitting among my otherwise uniformly grey SNES carts.

I don't mind my Majesco re-releases myself, which is why I'm not gonna go out of my way to get the original release versions of those games I have, unless they're real cheap (like 10 bucks per game or less cheap). My F-Zero million seller was obtained because I got it brand new so it didn't matter to me that much that it was one of those "million seller" editions. Also, the SNES "million seller" editions don't bother me much because they're not nearly as obnoxious as the later "player's choice/million sellers/collector's choice/etc." editions of games on later consoles (like those yellow Gamecube ones.....egad.....any color but yellow! I have 10 Gamecube games and the only one that's "player's choice" is my Soul Calibur II, sticks out like a sore thumb). But I agree, finding NES variants seems more interesting than the SNES ones. Not just for the label variants, but also cart colors, which could be another interesting topic on here (if it hasn't been talked about already).

Now see, I don't mind the yellow, it's that PS1 Greatest Hits Green color I can't stand :?

...oddly, it doesn't bother me that the Xbox game cases are essentially the same color....weird.

I can't stand either, but the PS1 greatest hits green is the most obnoxious. (I also do not mind XBOX cases, but they are not my favorite.) I try to avoid, but do not really mind, the PS2 red. I do prefer the black-label releases, however, which is why I my copy of "Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition" is one pulled from the box set rather than the retail release.

You should check out Atari 2600 variants if you think the NES is crazy.

This is true. Trying to collect variants for that system would be insane.

On this topic, I must say that I miss the "wild west" days of unlicensed video games. Homebrew games aside, you do not really see unlicensed games any more, and I assume that either licensing restrictions eased significantly or releasing unlicensed games became very difficult after the 16-bit era.

Oddly enough I'd rather have the PS1 green than the Gamecube yellow but then again I don't have PS1 games in my collection so I can't really comment on how they would actually look alongside black PS1 games. The PS2 red doesn't look too bad alongside black PS2 games, so I'll agree there.

As for the unlicensed games not being as prevalent today...probably because we have less tolerance for shitty games :insert AVGN reference about shitty games here:....

Oh yeah and I just got Wario's Woods today for the SNES.

SNES game count: 45

That deserves a beer or 8
