Great read, thanks for sharing! Loved the Epitaph at the end, rings true.

If only IGN's reviews were as good as their articles.

Re: IGN: Sega ahead of it's time.
I found it as good as their reviews. It can seem it's going somewhere but after a couple of paragraphs it seems like the author didn't think things throughly. Claiming that the Wiimote is based on the Dreamcast fishing rod is bizarre, for someone who knows enough of games to know about it surely knows about the power glove and other similar devices. And, obviously, the conclusion that Sega failed for being "ahead of it's time" is simply false.
So I guess that means I didn't like the article

Re: IGN: Sega ahead of it's time.
I liked about a third of this article. More than anything, I respect Sega's work with consoles having online capability. There's some really cool stuff there. However, I don't think it really makes sense to attribute motion gaming or built in memory to Sega at all. As people have pointed out Nintendo introduced motion gaming with the powerglove, although I believe that even before that there was a controller developed for the Atari capable of motion control. Games had save batteries for more than a decade before the Saturn launched, and even during the Saturn's console war a majority of N64 games had save batteries included.

Wow, they didn't do their homework before writing the article.
The Turbo Express came out before the Nomad so beat Sega on playing your console games on a handheld.
Yes, and 6 years after the Express.
Oh, the Express had a TV tuner too. I'm not sure if the add-on came before the GG one, but still.
Sooo, either the Express was first, not Sega, or the Express tuner came out after the GG one and it wasn't a wait until Xbox. Either way, fail again.
As pointed out in the thread already, Nintendo had the save thing down first with the disk system, and then batteries in the carts which let us save Zelda games as we didn't get the disk system. I don't get the 'nickel and diming' crack at cave cards. You're still paying for the memory in the system. Internal saving has its plusses, but so do memory cards that are easily transportable and you can buy more when you run out of space.
Dialing up for games? Well maybe they've got something finally.
Wait no. Gameline for Atari 2600.

it quite literally brought the home console experience to a handheld a whole 16 years before the Vita did.

It wasn’t until 18 years later that we’d watch the idiot box on an Xbox

I knew TG-Express slips but the Gameline, dude, you could teach gaming history in college.

And internal saves to the console was a feature of the Turbo-CD and the 3DO.
