Oh please. It's been a relationship drama ever since the second season and the show was never anything more than "oh hey look we use complex scientific terminology in every day conversations, arent we nerdy!". Most of the stuff felt forced like as if a bunch of pseudointellectual kids who know some fancy words were trying to impress each other. The video gaming, comic books and other stuff like that they did better than other shows thank God for that, but most of the time the focus seemed to be in "lets laugh at these pathethic/weird men because they have stupid/weird hobbies". Apparently that got old and now every one except Sheldon is in a relationship and having sex and getting drunk every other episode and on top of that they just had to add that ghastly Farrah Fowler character. Let's make a show about nerds and turn them "normal" because it's obivous that those people are faulty because they are different than us and therefore must be fixedGamerforlife wrote:Big Bang Theory does stuff like this all the time

Nail on the head man.

Also, Leonard and Penny's "relationship" has turned into a "We were on a break" thing just like Friends...Luke wrote:

I wonder what will become of Community without Dan Harmon on its 4th season. The last 8 eps from season 3 were WAY good.

The show has never been a relationship drama. It's a comedy and whenever there is relationship stuff happening it's usually just there to be mined for laughs. The Big Bang Theory is always first and foremost about the jokes.
And with all due respect, anyone who just views the characters as pseudo intellectuals who use fancy words is clearly just not educated enough to see otherwise. A lot of the stuff they talk about is based on real science, which makes sense because they are, you know, scientists. That's not to say that the show doesn't occasionally slip up with science stuff, but a lot of it is accurate. When Sheldon talks about Schrodinger's Cat he actually knows what the hell he's talking about. And Amy, the neuroscientist, is played by Mayim Balik, who actually has a PhD in neuroscience.
Translation - The guys are geek/nerd stereotypes. Yeah, so what's your point? First time you ever seen a comedy with stereotypical characters? Or characters who aren't realistic? That's kind of what comedies do. You ever actually meet any kids like the ones on South Park? I know I haven't. And in case you haven't noticed, EVERY character on The Big Bang Theory is a stereotype. It's not just the, "pathetic/weird men" who have "stupid/weird hobbies" a.k.a stereotypical nerds. We've had stereotypical jocks, stereotypical Christians, stereotypical blond, bimbos (Penny), and stereotypical Indian people(Priya's parents). If you think they are supposed to be realistic characters you're watching the wrong show.Menegrothx wrote: "lets laugh at these pathethic/weird men because they have stupid/weird hobbies".
The only character who regularly gets drunk is Penny, because she's the stereotypical blond, bimbo. The only characters to have had a real, lasting relationship are Howard and Bernadette. Raj can't get a girlfriend to save his life, and seems borderline gay. Lenard seems to be with a different girl every week. He's the closest thing the group has to a lady's man, though he clearly has the whole Ross/Rachel thing going on with Penny. Stewart from the comic book shop has no luck with women. The guy with the speech impediment is like vagina repellent and Sheldon, of course, is asexual. Or at least seems to be. So really, the show has had ONE real relationship so farMenegrothx wrote: Apparently that got old and now every one except Sheldon is in a relationship and having sex and getting drunk every other episode and on top of that they just had to add that ghastly Farrah Fowler character. There's nothing even remotely normal about any of the guys on the show. So I don't know what you're watching. With the possible exception of Howard - who has matured some since being with Bernadette - they are still playing the same, awkward, nerd stereotypes they were when the show started, and they aren't portrayed as anymore "faulty" than everyone else they interact with. Penny's a bimbo, her usual boyfriends are dumb jock types, all of the parents on the show are some kind of exaggerated, negative stereotype, professors have been shown to be rather corrupt or screwed up (like the one played by Lewis Black), etc, etc, etc. It's a comedy, everyone is "faulty." That's where your laughs come from. That's kind of how comedies work.

The funny thing is that Big Bang Theory is a show about nerds for a mainstream audience, while Community is a show about mainstream people for a nerdy audience.

I remember Big Bang talking about memory card usage with Mario 64... WRRRRRRRROOONG!
Re: Did you see the video game episode of Community last nig
I gave community a few chances when it first started, and I've caught a couple episodes here and there, but really don't find it particularly funny. And of course the internet likes to tell people that when they don't find something funny they must just be too stupid to get it. No, I get it, it just doesn't make me laugh. Who cares? I don't care for 30 rock either.
Re: Did you see the video game episode of Community last nig
I don't think one has to be super intelligent to get the jokes in Community, but a lot of it does require a fairly extensive knowledge of pop culture, particularly movies. For example, they did an episode that was based almost entirely on the film My Dinner With Andre, which is a movie that not that many people have seen. A lot of the humor is lost on people because they don't even recognize what the movie is lampooning. Granted, if you hate that kind of post modernist humor, this show is not going to be the show for you, even if you get the references.

Re: Did you see the video game episode of Community last nig
The show is meant for mainstream audiences. While the terminology that they use is correct (and the script probably partially made by real scientists), that doesn't mean their conversations serve any purporse besides showing the audience how smart they are. I never said that the characters are pseudo intellectuals, what I was saying is that the way the script is written, the conversations can look out of place and like a showcase of their vocabulary.Gamerforlife wrote: And with all due respect, anyone who just views the characters as pseudo intellectuals who use fancy words is clearly just not educated enough to see otherwise. They use a lot of fancy words in a small time frame, which leads to the fact that most people watching the show have no idea what they are talking about. That is the purporse of those conversations. Just because it is based on real science, doesnt mean that those conversations serve any meaningful purporse. Many scifi movies, shows and anime use the sort of lingo that might be technically correct, but doesn't ultimately have any meaning, in order to set the mood. The person watching the show doesn't know what those people are talking about, and is therefore convinced. Just think of the stuff the people working at the headquarters were saying in Neon Genesis Evangelion while the kids were fighting against Angels.
Gamerforlife wrote: When Sheldon talks about Schrodinger's Cat he actually knows what the hell he's talking about.
Funny that you should pick Schrödinger's cat as an example, as it's one of the few examples of higher level of physics that the average person is aware of, like E=MC^2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6 ... ar_culture
There are less factual errors and the views arent so antiquated as they are in other shows (10 meg pipe and high scores in MMORPGs), but just like with the science, the show never even tries to get in-depth with comic book culture or mmorpgs. It's not the main focus of the show, talking about physics or MMORPGs. Just like with "science lingo" they only scratch the surface so that the viewer knows that these guys play video games. If I recall right, Sheldon explained to Penny that Halo is a "combat simulation" when they were playing Halo. They never showed the screen. It's irrelevant to the show, because that is not what the show is about. All the "nerd stuff" is superficial because the focus of the show is in situational comedy and relationships. It only serves as a mean to bring more depth to the characters and helps to portray them as nerds. The actual subject matters are fairly irrelevant to to show. In short, this show is about the people buying comic books, not about comic books. But wait, how can the show be nothing more than "oh hey look we use complex scientific terminology in every day conversations, arent we nerdy!" if they do the video gaming, comic books and other stuff so well?
Raj has to get drunk in order to speak to women and Howard and Leonard have visited a bar multiple times throughout the show. If I recall correctly, Amy Farrah Fowler was also drunk in a few episodes. Raj usually drinks alone and to be able to tolerate talking to women so he still fits the stereotypeGamerforlife wrote: The only character who regularly gets drunk is Penny
He had sex with Penny and BBT wikia states the followingGamerforlife wrote: Raj can't get a girlfriend to save his life, and seems borderline gay.
He has had a number of one-night-stands and brief dates
He is much more successful in casual sex than the more sexually aggressive Howard
Those are side characters.Gamerforlife wrote: Stewart from the comic book shop has no luck with women. The guy with the speech impediment is like vagina repellent
How do you define a "real" relationship? Why is the relationship between Leonard and Priya/Penny/Leslie inferioir and not worthy of the title "REAL relationship"?Gamerforlife wrote:So really, the show has had ONE real relationship so far
But the characters engage in un-nerdy social activites more frequently and two of them have girlfriends. They are obivously trying to distance the show from what it was like in the beginning by turning two of the main characters more "normal". Even Sheldon has Amy (according to Wikipedia she will become his girlfriend in the fifth season) and Raj isnt as shy as he used to be (again, getting laid with Penny).Gamerforlife wrote: they are still playing the same, awkward, nerd stereotypes they were when the show started
