This was yesterday, but I forgot to post. it. More of a "whew!" really.

I'd been putting off getting gas way past the light coming on and way past the bottom mark. Wed night I went to send some packages and was thwarted by the DIY machine being in the middle of a 'maintenance' cycle at 11 PM. Why the heck was it scheduled for that time? Why not 3 AM? Anyway, kinda cheesed that I'd wasted a trip, I skipped getting gas again on the way home.

So yesterday I went during lunch break to send packages out and was going to stop for gas too. Making the last turn before a straight run to a gas station along the way, my car did a herky jerk. Oh crap. Traffic light halfway down this 1 mile stretch and it's red. Dammit. More herky jerky getting going. About 200 feet from the gas station the jig is up and I mash the clutch right as the engine dies. Luckily I coasted and with a powerless tug on the wheel and stop, I reached an empty gas pump.

Reworded for gamers:

I was really pushing my car hard around that track and I thought I wasn't gonna make it so I looked at the timer ticking down and I hit 00 and my car was slowing down and I crossed the finish line.

I had a situation just like Hobie's once. Ended up coasting to the gas pump. My relief was incredible.

Great Story! You reminded me of this happening to me a few years back. Car died on the freeway and I can see the fuel pressure gauge at zero but bubbling slightly as the pump was trying to refill the carb bowls. Ended up getting out of the car and rocking the back to slosh the low gas to the inlet. Lucky I have an electric fuel pump mounted in the back, the original mechanical would not have pulled from the front. Every bounce I could hear the pump oscillate as it was trying to draw liquid between gulps of air. After a few bounces I could hear the relief valve in the pump kicking, looked inside and got the six pounds of pressure back. Chugged off the freeway after eventually getting to the exit. Lucky I have a REO pump in the primaries, squirting just that little bit of extra gas in whenever the fuel pump started spitting air again. Same Herky Jerky motion you described with the accelerator pump, may have helped the back slosh the remaining bit of fuel the inlet.

Yeah, the placement of the inlet can bite you on some cars. I think tanks are designed to minimize it now. When I was off at school I was putting off gas another time and ran out leaving my apartment for the gas station. I made it about 50 feet from the apartment gates. Rolled to the side of the road which had a ditch and got as far out of the way as I could without being totally in the ditch. Walked back to my apartment and called my friend that had a gas can.

After fetching the gallon of gas and pouring it in, my car still wouldn't start. Inlet must have been on the driver side but the car was tilted into the ditch. Had to push my car back on the road to get going.

I promise I don't let my car run out of gas all the time.

Wow i have never run outta gas. that is so bad for your car when you do that it sucks crud and dirt into your engine. It's funny though to see so many guys on here admiting they have run outta gas. I always thought that was something only girls do or get accused of when there car breaks down.

Also your fuel pump is cooled by the gas around it. If you use your gas warning as a your indicator, you can cause your fuel pump to overheat and wear itself out.
