Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
Re: Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
Alright show of hands who that has said no they shouldn't be created owns a copy of earth bound?
Honestly I see no problem with the market becoming flooded with eb repros, as long as they are high quality repros. There would be two reasons to flood the market with them, one to make money off the idiots paying ridiculous prices for them. The other would be to get the prices to drop.
Either one of those are fine reasons by me. It just seems like either reason would actually get the price to go down so the only people that would be affected would be the people that already have a legit cart that would be lessened in value.

I have a few legit carts and I say...Bring 'em on. The game is meh (sorry folks) so it is a status symbol to own it, imo. That said, there is no status in owning a repro, so the originals would prob go up even more.flex wood wrote:Alright show of hands who that has said no they shouldn't be created owns a copy of earth bound?

Re: Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
Guys, I really and truly want to see the price go down for Earthbound. However, there is no good option here. These reproduction carts would be wrong, in my eyes. I'm sad to say, the price is going to stay high, even if the repro's got brought in. Suddenly, knowing you had a legit cart would make the price jump to 150, maybe 200 dollars. Then, we know we're screwed.
Now, I would love to see a rerelease of the series, or a reboot or continuation of the series, but do you think that'll happen? No. However, I would like to get a petition, or some kind of initiative, to get Nintendo to do it anyways. Ala, project Rainfall. I see this, as say, Project Ness.
Just throwing out something I really want done. Imagine playing Mother on your Wii U or 3DS (hell, maybe both!) and using the second screen to deal with your inventory, check stats, and any other fun thing you could think of.

If I ever sell my cart, I'm opening it up, taking a pic of the board, and linking the Counterfeit vs. Official examples.
I may do that with certain GBA games in the future as well (not anytime soon).
Pirate carts have made me (and maybe everyone else) paranoid.

That's another huge reason I don't want Earthbound repros. If I'm going to own this game, I want it to be the original. The last thing I want is for this already way too pricey game to skyrocket to $300 cart only or something because of an influx of reproductions.mjmjr25 wrote:Repros don't hurt value, in fact, often they increase the value of originals - look at JP Saturn prices pre burn and post burn, prices have gone up significantly - so I personally don't care. I am just amused at the morality lines people will draw.
All those pirate GBA carts make buying them on ebay a pain in the ass as it is, I don't want to start seeing that with EB too.
I can guarantee you the value of my games going down has nothing to do with my opposition. I'd rather them go down in value if anything honestly.

Re: Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
I'd say it's fine, but then I remember that these things get into the mainstream (well, as mainstream as retro gamer's eBay) market eventually and are passed off as legitimate carts. Some poor sucker's going to be stuck with a fake Earthbound and may not even know it.
Re: Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
So maybe if you make one for your personal use, it's ok. If someone wants to sell repros saying that are legit copies, the gaming community will hunt down that bastard.
Looks like it's not a good idea considering that the game it's a bit pricey.
Btw if you think that fake copies of GBA games on ebay are annoying in my country there's A LOT of bootlegs games (SNES, famicom, genesis, etc) so finding a legit copy it's REALLY a pain.

Even if it's for personal use, they get sold or handed down at one point or another.Damm64 wrote:So maybe if you make one for your personal use, it's ok. If someone wants to sell repros saying that are legit copies, the gaming community will hunt down that bastard.

Re: Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
i couldn't agree anymore. a repro shouldn't be made because a)you are too poor to buy the original or B)you are too cheap to buy the original. there are plenty of other ways to play the game if you don't want to dish out the money.AppleQueso wrote:NO.
Potential for abuse is through the roof. Fake earthbound carts have popped up on ebay before, landing in the hands of unsuspecting buyers. Repros of unreleased games? Okay. Rom hacks? Okay. English translations of games that were never released here? Okay. Games that actually were released retail? Noooooooooo.
If you want to play it THAT bad, just emulate it or use a flash cart.
with the high demand, you could buy the game and sell it for pretty much what you bought it for.
if you took a shit, please put it back
Re: Earthbound Reproduction Carts: Should they be created?
This isn't some huge moral dilemma. It's about a 20 year old game that hardly anyone cares about. I'm not trying to pull this out into a world perspective, but it really isn't that big a deal. If someone wants to pop a EB label on a flash cart for personal use that is their business.
Use caution when you buy expensive things. Ask for pics. If it's too good to be true, it probably is.
