Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Save the fatty for an emergency. Like when my brother got Metal Gear Solid, he left the PS2 on for 4 days because he couldn't save his game. And yes, he did finish the game.

A slim PS2 would've overheated long before day 4. Also, I believe the original PS2 has a faster disk drive than the slim.

If you play any import games, many Japanese ones can take advantage of the hard disk drive. Aside from the hard disk expansion....really no benefits over the slim on. Umm unless it is one of the early ones with an i.link port...

It's the other way round. The slim has a faster drive than the fatty. Plus the slim has extra texture filtering options.

I'd keep the fatty and install a hard drive in it, then you can install a lot of games on it and not even need the disks.

As for drive compatibility this 5 second google search brought this up...

How did Sony do that? I thought the whole point of a front-loading drive was to spin the disk at higher speeds than what is safe in a top-loader. Otherwise you're just making the system more expensive.

Please don't tell me I'm wrong about the overheating too.

I was incorrect about the slim having a faster drive. They are both exactly the same. I don't know where I remember seeing/reading that. It's probably an option on PS3s or something, I can't quite remember.

I do feel that the drive is better quality on the slim as loading 'feels' quicker to me. Maybe it seeks data faster rather than spinning the disk faster.

Plus they could've sped the disk drive up by having a top loader because it has a buffer that engages and stops the disk when the lid is opened.

I think my PS2 fatty heats up less than my slim PS2 when they have been on for a while. The slim gets really hot when playing something like God Of War 2 whereas the fat PS2 doesn't seems fazed at all, probably because of the internal fan. My Slim is just passively cooled and heats up like a bitch. It takes it like a man though, i've never had it DRE or crash on me. Both my passively cooled slims seem to take heat better than my other one with a fan in.

I think there's something flawed with the fan cooled slims, maybe it blows heat into one area and doesn't allow it to pass out of the system. When I hold it when it's hot I can't feel hot air coming out of it (like putting your hand round the back of the 360, or a PC), it's just warm to touch the plastic.

yup yup. We've got a 120gig hdd that we picked up at walmart. Certain brands fit the hdd adapter better than others. I don't remember exactly, but I believe seagate fit better than maxtor. So, hdd +adapter + hd advance = awesome.

Games on your hdd will load faster than by the cd/dvd. Just a thought.
