Cool character creation tools

Post by J T »

This thread has multiple purposes:

First, I want to compile a list of games with character creation tools.
Second, I want to see what your personalized characters look like.
Third, I'd like to have a discussion about what your personalized character creations say about you, or how they provide a different affect to your experience of a game (particularly RPGs).

I'll keep a running list of games on the first post as they are mentioned.

Games with Character Creation Tools:

Here are some of my characters:

Skyrim Character
He's a grizzly norseman. I wanted a man that looked dirty and rugged who is likely a hermit or nomad living in the cold forests of Skyrim. He needed to be hearty and rugged, but introspective. I basically want to play Skyrim as a loner hermit outdoorsman that has little interest in society. Sometimes I want to do that in real life too.

Dragon Age Character
With this character I wanted to be a female elven creature. I wanted her to be old and wise. Beauty is not her strongest feature and she has a slightly weathered face and greyed hair. She also wears eccentric makeup for accenting her features, which is heavy enough to border on being warpaint. She's a caring social creature, but don't piss her off because she will engage in battle.

Fallout 3/NV
Mass Effect(s)
Hellgate London
3D Dot Game Heroes

Bother listing MMOs? Obviously they all have creation tools. What about FPS like Doom/Quake/Unreal and whatnot where you can choose, edit colors, or import models that have been made?

good call on 3D Dot Game Heroes, hobes!

I was thinking about the Tony Hawk games. I think all of them besides the first had character creation, right? I recently played through THPS3 using a custom character that looked so much like me that my wife was cracking up watching me play.

I don't have an interest in MMOs personally, but if people want to mention them, I'll add them to the list.

As for Doom/Quake/Unreal/etc. I don't want anything that isn't a character creation tool already built into the game or that is not user friendly. I also don't want anything that only lets you pallette swap colors and a few outfits; I really want to be able to change facial features and/or body types. I most like the ones that let you change eye width, jaw length, etc.

I went for another Dragon Age character similar to my previous one, but she is less ostentatious and more sorrowful and aged. I'm imagining that she has some backstory full of regrets and is setting out for hero's quest in hopes of redemption so she can perhaps forgive herself.

In the Harrowing

Close up in the templar's circle

I was surprised to find out that the elf and mage classes start in different scenarios, so I might play both quests in tandem, just to see what happens. Maybe I'll create a dwarven woman too.

While I realize it is the point of the game, would you consider the Fighter Maker series to include what you are interested in?

Also, games like Soul Calibur 3, 4, and 5, as well as Mortal Kombat: Deception?

Fight Night Champion has a disturbingly realistic character creation system. My friend and I were able to box eachother virtually, and even have the commentators use our names (since they are common).

My wife was a little disturbed to see an HD version of me getting beat up and bloodied.

If you include wrestling games that will probably double the size of the list.

Arcanum
Baldur's Gate series
Icewind Dale

Would you count Planescape? You can customize your character's skills, but not their appearance.

No, I'm really interested just in appearance customization, not skills customization for this thread. (No disrespect to The Nameless One). ;)
