I think a better question is whether or not replacing the GD-ROM drive with a CD drive would work. I imagine replacement GD-ROM drives won't be around forever and with a CD drive at least you would be able to play backups and homebrew apps.

You know, you might be able to connect a DVD drive to the system and, using custom firmware, create a bootloader that maps GD-ROM calls to DVD file locations.

Something like this was done for the TG-CD. It's a Super CD called Super Hucard. It loads hucard images of a certain size or smaller into super system memory cache and then basically emulates the hucard interface and maps the hucard calls to the memory cache.

Though quite a bit more complicated, an alternative could theoretically be rigged for the DC. It might cause streaming data to stutter due to loading delays but straight loads should work.

Perhaps the expansion port (where the modem/bba goes) is where to look. Make some kind of an DVD-drive expansion that sits under the system that would its own BIOS/Firmware. I wonder if Sega had this in mind for its own never released DVD player.
