I dont think you can say that online gaming is equally as good as singleplayer because although that might be true for some, what about people who like story in their games?
Make your own!

Besides, once the story's over, it's over. Nobody plays Streets of Rage, Road Rash or Sonic the Hedgehog for the story - if you do, you're a freak.

As Ack pointed out, online play is a great way to improve your overall skill - not just with the one game, I might add. Course, it's mostly all down to who you're playing with.
Ok, true, lots of games don't have much of a story, but they have things that would never be in multiplayer, such as higher immersion. A singleplayer game will also have a balanced difficulty and scripted events, which are things i prefer to have when im playing a game. You won't get any of this in a multiplayer game, and if you decide to "Make your own" story while playing a game of deathmatch, you're a freak

For a couple of notes, Role-players in MMOs make their own stories all the time, though I won't make any judgments as to whether they're freaks. Also, a single-player game is not necessarily "balanced." I've seen some broken AI in my day, as well as some under-powered characters. Multiplayer games can become unbalanced based on team-size, class types or equipment, through code manipulation(cheating), or simply by skill, sure, but there are ways to get past one by utilizing another. I've seen a Scout in TFC drop a Heavy, and if you solely crunch numbers, that should never happen.

All I'm going to say is, to each his own. I like both single- and multiplayer titles. Currently two of the games I want to play the most are multiplayer, Warhammer Online and Left 4 Dead. But I also want good single player experiences, like the upcoming Red Faction game. Try a little of everything, and if you pick up a multiplayer title some time, I invite you to talk about it, see if any of us are playing it. We may just jump into a server and have some fun, who knows? It'll give you some stories to tell the kids. Shoot, I could have my own thread, talking about some of the great multiplayer moments I've been a part of...

Games these days try to rely on selling because of multi-player features not becasue of dept. Games these days have lost their magic because people are so freakin obsessed with online gaming.

Nope. Persona 3 is a great example thats not true. A 90 hour dungeon crawling RPG with a great story behind it, no online mode.

Okay maybe not all games but a good number of them. Espcially american developed ones are so obsessed with online gaming. I hope this fad dies and we get back to the roots of good games that aren't trying to rely on a gimmick.

I disagree that Singleplayer games plainly have a more balanced difficulty; however, that being said, I actually prefer an unbalanced difficulty. I like things to be unpredictable, less linear, to expect the unexpected, etc. I personally think an unbalanced game makes things much more interesting - Contra would lose some appeal for me if it was easy, personally. Scripted events are still present in many multiplayer games, though that's mostly down to what kind of game you're playing.

Hey, I suggested anyone who wants a story to make their own - each to his own, I guess. :P

Though, all said, one thing I can agree on is that certain genres are much better suited to Singleplayer only - for example, I can't speak for everyone, but I find Secret of Mana a much more immersive experience in Singleplayer.

I'd rather play a great game like chrono trigger any day of week over some mindless multi-player game that's gimmick is wow your playing with other people and friends and thats why your having so much fun. I swear american developers have ruined much of current day gaming because they are pushing online/multi-player games so much. But then again prior to this era they just put out majority of crap consosle games in general.

My only real online/multiplayer experience was a few rounds of counter strike. Sure it was kinda fun but I don't see what the fuss is over.

I much rather be playing silent hill, resident evil, a good rpg, figther etc.
