I think the shortest ones are going to be around 30 to 40 hours. And they'll be action-RPGs like Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath. If you want some good RPGs that are turn-based and not too long, I'd say pick up the Shadow Hearts titles. Can't say I remember how long they were, but I don't remember doing any level grinding in them so they didn't wear out their welcome. They're great games, too. Dragon Quest 8 was fairly short compared to other DQ games, but I think it was still around 50 hours. (Again, short for a PS2 RPG.) You might want to look into Wizardry: Forsaken Land, Pengel, Okage, the Dark Cloud games and the Summoner games.

As for what RPG I'm playing right now: SMT Devil Survivor. I'm enjoying but man I wish it was less grindy. I'd actually like to have the demons level up better so I didn't have to keep replacing them, or have the game level ME up better as I played so I could fuse better demons without having to play a bunch of random battles just to have the right level. Still, the game is fun and the storyline is pretty interesting. Some great characters in it too.

Maybe Disgaea 1 and 2 are short enough? Those are PS2. I honestly haven't played them, but the main stories in Disgaea 3 and 4 aren't very long. Plenty to do outside of the main story, but that's all optional.

Yeah, but you can knock out the main story in 20 hours. The rest is just insane stat grinding and beating ridiculous levels just to see if you can.

I would not recommend Disgaea, unless you only want to experience the bare minimum of a game, as you would have to avoid so much of the fun stuff to clear it in 90 hours.

I mean, there are a lot of rpgs that are clearable in 20 hours, if you really are trying to rush through, but that is usually saved for a 2nd playthrough, as if you are enjoying yourself, why rush through it?

I would have hated finishing FFIX in less than 12 hours in my first playthrough, even if it nabbed me the Excalibur 2.

I cleared Disgaea 3 in 20 - 25. I don't feel like I missed everything. But when I do feel like going back to it there will still be plenty to keep me busy along with the epilogue. :)

Spent the last two days playing Diablo 3 off and on w/ a buddy. It was a bit of a frustrating experience, and the game didn't seem all that great either. Blizzard really dropped the ball by making the game playable online only (oops, another server crash! who'd realize that would happen after seeing the amount of pre-orders? herp a derp!), getting the game to run correctly was an exercise in frustration, and it wasn't that great of a game when we could finally play it. It's also fairly easy and I was kinda shocked at how quickly we were getting good drops, advancing levels and getting through chapters. Trying to solo anything besides barbarian would be a bit tough (I was a wizard and had a hard time of it, had to play some bits solo b/c the game ran like shit on the computer I was using), but it still seemed way too easy. When I first got the game going, I went into a public game with some guys who rushed off and started fighting while I stood there trying to figure out how to get my friend into a quest. I started getting XP while just standing around doing nothing and was like WTF?! Yeah, the game will reward you for doing absolutely nothing. Really fuckin weird. I got to level two just from standing there trying to figure out how to play the game w/ my friend.

Well, I just finished Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I will be writing up my thoughts on it for the Games Beaten 2012 thread. In the meantime, as I am now going to begin my Summer Challenge, I believe the SNES version of Breath of Fire is in the works for me.

Hahahaha, but this thread is specifically about RPGs, and that will likely be the next one I play. I know, Opa, I'm getting it done.
