There's Bit.Trip ...something. I forgot the title. It's pretty much a combo of a horizontal shooter and a music game.

edit: Bit.Trip Fate! That's the title.

Wow, it's almost like everyone here forgot about Shmusicup.
Gaming accomplishments:
Nibbler (marathon): 251,169,160 / Nibbler (one life): 5,263,360 (WR)
Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)

Exactly. I think that musical games can be thought as pattern games taken to the extreme. If you take a shmup and add infinitedly fast and precise movement you will end up with something very similar to a musical game but without the music.

There must be at least one decent game that mixes both things even if a great game is unlikely as we would have probably heard of it by now. I will try to check out Shmusicup and Beat Hazard try to think a bit about them.

I think that sooner or later we will get something that really works, probably after a pioneering game and it will be completely amazing.

I'm glad you find the concept interesting, I really appreciate it :D
