There's Bit.Trip ...something. I forgot the title. It's pretty much a combo of a horizontal shooter and a music game.
edit: Bit.Trip Fate! That's the title.

Re: Design: What about a musical shmup?
Exactly. I think that musical games can be thought as pattern games taken to the extreme. If you take a shmup and add infinitedly fast and precise movement you will end up with something very similar to a musical game but without the music.Nemoide wrote:Music games and shoot-em-ups both have a lot of common in that they typically involve a ton of stuff coming at the player. IMO the big difference between Beatmania IIDX and a bullet hell is that in one you're trying to hit everything perfectly and in the other you're trying to dodge everything perfectly.
There must be at least one decent game that mixes both things even if a great game is unlikely as we would have probably heard of it by now. I will try to check out Shmusicup and Beat Hazard try to think a bit about them.
I think that sooner or later we will get something that really works, probably after a pioneering game and it will be completely amazing.
I'm glad you find the concept interesting, I really appreciate it
