No audio or video on my N64

Post by soul_hacker »

I'm not sure if I should put this here or in the Nintendo forum, so if this is in the wrong place, I apologize in advance.

A few days ago, I tried playing my N64, but I wouldn't get any audio or video. The console will turn on and I will get the red light, but my TV just keeps on reading "No Signal." I should point out that about a year ago, I did open it up and clean it, and I'm not sure if I've played it since.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions on fixing it?

What did you clean it with and how did you clean it? You can rule out the TV by just trying it on another TV. If you have spare cables try them. If I remember correctly it's the same cables as SNES (I forgot, i no longer have my N64).

I've mentioned this before here in the past.

but sometimes they totally die!

I have one just like this. Its a nice clear green one that I bought a few years ago with 5 games. But no ram chip.

It didn't work. The lights came on, but no action on the screen. It also had a third party A/C adapter. I thought maybe it was this?

I then came across a normal n64 and bought it too. It came with an expansion ram and original plug. And I removed the plug and the ram and put it in the green one and still nothing happened. The other one works okay with both ram chips.

I dont open up stuff, so I really cant tell if the green 64 was messed up or not.

But I guess 64's may be really senstive like that.

Time to find another one.

Indeed, if you used ill advised things like windex, brasso, or stove cleaner and didn't do a final step with alcohol, contact cleaner, or something more appropriate then the leftover film could have corroded since you last used it.

I actually cleaned it with compressed air, since it was a lot cleaner than I thought. I've also tried two other SNES AV cables and I keep on having the same problem. Maybe it's a connection problem? I guess I'll try to open it up again and see if something is wrong with it.

I doubt you'd have a problem with the connector. Those pins are huge.

Mine has been doing this lately, but I can always get it working in 3 or 4 tries.

Could it be the actual cartridge slot? I had a second SNES that I thought was totally destroyed because of the pins in the slot. I found that while trying to bend them I accidentally bent a pair out too far. When I inserted a cart it smushed them down really bad.

Yesterday I was messing with it and able to get the pins back up, although they still looked like crap. It now works better than my regular SNES. You may want to try contact cleaner or 70%+ rubbing alcohol on both games and carts.

Hm, I might try that, cleaning it with alcohol. I've tried turning it on and off a bunch of times and nothing happened. I also tried it with different games, but I'll clean everything with alcohol and see how that works.
